The Treaties of Rome were signed by six member states - Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Luxemburg and the Netherlands - in 1957 in order "to lay the foundations of an ever closing union among the peoples of Europe". This was an important milestone for Europe, and precursor to the foundation of the European Union. The 60th anniversary of the Treaties of Rome is a celebration of this historic moment, which reflected the willingness to move towards a more integrated Europe, and to sustain peace and harmony between those member states after decades marked by war. This agreement has also produced many other positive outcomes, such as the Erasmus student exchange programme and open borders for work, travel and study. In challenging times of today, the ability to work together is an asset for the future of Europe.
