No young person should ever be without a safe place to sleep. However, HUD's 2023 Point-in-Time Estimates report confirms that at least 50,000 children and youth are experiencing homelessness tonight in the U.S. Covenant House doors are open 24/7.

Homelessness has many forms, from couch surfing and unstable housing, to living outdoors without shelter. It is of great concern to all of us at Covenant House that this year's HUD Point-in-Time Estimates show that nearly four in ten young people experiencing homelessness were unsheltered in 2023.

In our final article this month covering how we can end homelessness for all, we need to recognize the intersecting and rising crises of homelessness and fentanyl.

“It’s not a matter of if we’re going to have a death due to fentanyl, it’s a matter of when. Years ago, we thought our job was helping young people weather the storm, but now, we realize the storm is inside of them,” said Alison Kear, CEO of Covenant House Alaska.

Alert! Even the relatively conservative numbers provided in the yearly Point-in-Time Estimates on homelessness from HUD show a MAJOR increase in youth homelessness this year. Through our own research, we are certain this number is even higher than reported.

During the holidays, we all try to love more, to give more of ourselves.

This holiday season we want to share with you a Christmas story that took place 33 years ago about a mother, her daughter, and Covenant House. May these words inspire you this Christmas, and remind you of the beautiful difference friends like you make in so many lives.

We are excited to announce that we have embarked on a partnership with Innovations for Youth (i4Y), an initiative out of the UC Berkeley School of Public Health, and also young people at Covenant House, to explore opportunities for more effective youth homelessness prevention practices and policies. By hearing directly from youth about which supports and services could have helped them to avoid (or reduce) homelessness experiences as well as related trauma and adversity, we will meaningfully elevate their voices and expertise within the larger dialogue around prevention in the United States and Canada. Stay tuned for more updates in early 2024!

In our second article this month covering how we can end homelessness for all, we have to address the challenges of data.

Just counting people who are currently living on the streets or in shelters does not cover the expanse of the general population of people who are experiencing a form of homelessness. It doesn’t include young people who are couch surfing, who are unstably housed at various times throughout the year, who have recently been homeless and have not yet found long-term housing, and more.

Today is World Migration Day and since July 2022, Covenant House New York has served more than 250 young people who have migrated to the U.S. from other countries. While our doors have always been open to youth from other cities and countries, there has been a significant increase in young immigrants seeking residency with us. They’re searching for the same things all our youth seek: safety, stability, and the opportunity to grow into their great promise.

“Like the young people we’ve always served, they just want to better their lives and find their place in this world, find their spot,” says Lisa Crook, CHNY chief program officer. “They have the same goals. They have the same desires, the same hopes, and the same dreams.”

We applaud the city of Houston’s approach to ending homelessness, and we know that for the young people we serve, housing availability is key to ending youth homelessness. It takes bold leadership from governments and nonprofits willing to advocate for effective solutions to homelessness, and we need to ignite and advance conversations about solutions that are working to end youth homelessness.

“What you’re doing tonight matters. There are 4.2 million youth experiencing homelessness each year in the U.S. alone. It is our moral obligation as a society to provide safe places for young people to sleep, to have no young person go hungry, no young person caught in the nightmare of human trafficking. We need to join with the voices of our young people to change laws, policies, and practices that lead to youth and young families becoming homeless in the first place.” - Covenant House President and CEO, Bill Bedrossian.

Congratulations to Saquon Barkley, a longtime supporter of Covenant House New Jersey and the Sleep Out movement, on being named a Walter Payton Man of the Year nominee!

“Everybody has their day when the game is taken away from you. You’re not that fast anymore; you’re not that strong; you’re not that explosive, and there will be a new wave of players that will come around and will have a name. But it’s the impact you make in the community. That’s what lasts. That’s what’s going to go a long way, not how many touchdowns I score.” - Saquon Barkley

Congratulations to our very own Saquon Barkley on being named a Walter Payton Man of the Year nominee!

For a few years now, operators of Chick-fil-A restaurants in the Tri-State area have rallied around Covenant House to provide meals and ongoing support for the youth in our care as they create their own path to independence. This year, they increased their support and joined the Times Square Sleep Out in NYC as a leading partner, supplying dinner and breakfast from their Bullpen and donating reflection journals and ground covers for all Sleep Out participants. And, several of their Operators gave up their beds and joined in the Sleep Out, showing our young people that their commitment goes beyond just provisions.

Once a resident facing homelessness himself, Derrick is now the guardian of dreams, the housing manager ensuring that the path he walked is smoother for those who follow. He now provides security for the grounds of Linden Commons, a new apartment community for young people experiencing homelessness who have transitioned out of Covenant House California to a life of independence.

Many youth experiencing homelessness have been in the foster care system, which can be a confusing and hurtful time without proper support. According to Covenant House alum Jay, “That’s why I want to share my story now. I don’t know if it will help, but someone out there could be going through some of the same things I went through. I found my way through it all, and I want others who feel alone to feel hope that things can get better.”

Our partners at Cisco have been absolutely vital to our mission. Without them, we wouldn’t currently be operating our new site in Santa Clara County. As Shelby Booker from Covenant House California puts it, “I can’t say enough about Cisco…we wouldn’t be here without Cisco’s support.” Thank you, Cisco, for your generosity, your hard work, and your dedication to youth facing homelessness.
