Hispanic Heritage Month has come to a close, and we enjoyed a variety of celebrations on campus! šŸŖ‡šŸ’ƒ

We kicked off the month with the vibrant sounds of a mariachi band that brought our community together through music and taught us a little bit more about the history of mariachi.

Students gathered for Paint y Platicar to casually connect through creativity and cultural expression.

Our Island Mix & Mingle celebrated the diversity of Hispanic and Caribbean cultures with great conversations, community and island vibes.

The energy was high at our Latin Dance Party as students came together to dance and celebrate the rhythms of Latin culture.

We concluded Hispanic Heritage Month with Conexiones, where students connected with Hispanic professionals and gained meaningful career insights.

Today's Guttman Leadership Team retreat focused on leadership, reflection and workplace culture. We explored the experiences that shaped our leadership journeys, discussed what motivates us to come to work each day, addressed challenges and shared ideas for creating an environment where everyone can thrive in service of students.

Thank you to Rachel Stephenson of The City University of New York Office of Transformation, Kaleigh Mrowka of the Constructive Dialogue Institute and Jennifer Lykins of the CUNY Center for Inclusivity and Equal Opportunity for facilitating a thoughtful and inspiring workshop.

Last week, we were thrilled to welcome Manhattan Deputy Borough President Miesha Smith to Guttman! She toured campus, met with President Elizabeth de León Bhargava, and connected with our students, staff, and faculty. Her insights on community boards, civic engagement, and leadership sparked meaningful conversations across campus.
As Deputy Borough President, she champions public education, small businesses, and arts and culture — priorities that resonate deeply with our mission.

Welcome back to CUNY, Miesha! Our students loved learning from your dedication to public service.

ā€œGuttman is home to me. And choosing Guttman to do this presentation is something that is a no-brainer to me.ā€
On September 29, Guttman alumnus Bashir Juwara returned to Guttman Community College to present research from his University of Cambridge MPhil in Development Studies dissertation, ā€œThe Impact of USAID Cuts and Other Foreign Aid in The Gambia.ā€
He also reflected on the path that brought him here, including the role his experiences at Guttman played in preparing him for the next steps in his academic journey.
Bashir’s story is a reminder that graduation doesn’t have to mark the end of someone’s connection to Guttman. Our alumni remain part of this community, and we’re always proud to welcome them home.
