Librarian Esther Johnson was hired 100 years ago in May of 1916 to begin work at the Seward Park Library--Johnston recounts what it was like to work on the old East Side 50 years later in 1966... and we have a few reflections of our own in 2016.

TOMORROW'S FILM SCREENING:
Thursday, March 31, 2016, 6:15 - 7:30 p.m.
@ The Seward Park Library

Sewing woman [motion picture]

Arthur E. D**g.1 film reel (14 min.) : sd., b&w. ; 16 mm.

Based on a collection of oral histories and the life of Zem Ping D**g, the filmmaker's mother, this film presents the life of a Chinese immigrant woman who worked in America's garment factories for over 30 years. Married in China at age 13, the "sewing woman" immigrated to the U.S. as a war bride, leaving behind her eldest son. As yards of fabric pass through her machine, the woman relates her gradual adjustment to life in the U.S. and the eventual reunion of her entire family. D**g's film combines footage shot in the villages of China and the factories of San Francisco's Chinatown with old home movies and personal photographs.

The Golden mountain on Mott Street [motion picture]

1 film reel (34 min.) : sd. b&w. ; 16 min.

Discusses the Chinese immigrant and the complex problems that confront him and his children as an ethnic minority in the United States.

TOMORROW--Drop by the Seward Park Library for:

Isaac in America: A Journey with Isaac Bashevis Singer

(16 mm color film, 1986, 58 minutes) Director: Judd Hirsch

This documentary examines the life and work of Yiddish author Isaac Bashevis Singer. It follows the writer, now in his 80's, strolling the streets of his Upper West Side New York neighborhood, on speaking tours and at writing sessions. As Singer reminisces about his youth in Warsaw, his immigration to the United States in 1935, and his apprenticeship at the Jewish Daily Forward, the film interweaves dramatic sequences from the author's A Day in Coney Island, a short story based on his first impressions of America.
