Inspired by true events, the film has already won critical acclaim and several awards in film festivals around the world, including the CICAE Award in Sarajevo and the audience award at the Transylvanian Film Festival.
LIBERTATE tells a lesser-known story that took place in the Transylvanian city of Sibiu during the 1989 fall of the communist dictatorship. Amid the chaos and panic generated by the protests against the regime, a police station in Sibiu becomes the scene of a violent assault that escalates into a confrontation between soldiers, police officers, civilian protesters and representatives of the secret police. Following a desperate attempt to escape the siege, several men are captured by the Army and accused of being terrorists.
“Tudor Giurgiu paints a realistic picture of the revolutionary chaos and turmoil, questions the established narratives and, most importantly, makes a thrilling film that grabs viewers’ attention, elicits an emotional response and leaves a lasting impression.” -
