Today’s Black History Month spotlight is on Octavia Thorne, Forsyth’s extraordinary secretary and hairstylist. Octavia is the backbone of Forsyth, ensuring that not only students but staff have everything they need to be successful daily. Here at Forsyth, we celebrate and honor our Black educators for the dedication they have towards our students’ success. Today’s Black History Month spotlight is on Mike Britto, special education team guru and a renowned digital artist. Below is a poem from Mike about his experience as a Black educator in NYC.

“In the halls where echoes hum like second chances, I stand, a reflection of possibility. My skin, a map of resilience, tells a story my students see mirrored on their own. We are the echoes of systems, yet within us ignites the fire of potential. My voice, a bridge between lived truth and academic might, dismantles stereotypes brick by brilliant brick. They may be over-aged, under-credited, or just starting out, but in their eyes, I see dreams waiting to defy the odds. For I am not just a teacher; I am a testament, a beacon showing them the path where knowledge becomes power, where struggle becomes springboard. Here at Forsyth, we celebrate and honor our Black educators for the dedication they have towards our students’ success. Today’s Black History Month spotlight is on Iesha Belfield, math extraordinaire and the Knicks biggest fan. Below is a quote from Iesha about her experience as a Black educator in NYC.

“I have been teaching mathematics for 22 years. I am often told by my students that I am the first math teacher of color that they have ever had. Usually when I tell someone that I am a teacher, they assume I teach Phys. Ed. and are often surprised when I say I teach mathematics. This is why it is important that black and brown people are represented in the field of education. I understand what it is like to grow up as a black student in an educational system where the odds are stacked against us. Now I am in a position where I can show other Black and brown students that it is possible to be smart, educated, and Black or Brown all at the same time. “
