HIPPO ATTACK! HE ALMOST GOT KILLED ON THEIR HONEYMOON

Anne and Sam had traveled from Washington State to Botswana, Africa for the trip of a lifetime. While staying at Pom Pom Camp, they set out on a canoe excursion in the Okavango Delta.

They noticed the hippos were uneasy and started to retreat, but it was too late. The hippo attacked Sam from the side and dragged him underwater.

Anna struck the hippo until it finally released him, then helped her critically injured husband escape the water.

Sam needed an established hospital immediately. Deep in Africa, he was in critical condition with nothing but a tent to get him through the night.

His family called over 10 different operators trying to arrange an emergency medevac, most of them didn’t even answer the phone.

Then they called VitalOne®️ 1-800-MEDEVAC

Because the location was so remote, a helicopter was the only way to reach him, and get him to an airport for a wing to wing transfer to MedEvac Jet

From there, Sam was flown to Johannesburg, where the trauma team at Netcare Milpark Hospital Level 1 Trauma Center, was ready to deliver the care he desperately needed.

It took 19 days of intensive care before he was well enough to fly home.

THE CLOCK IS TICKING - HELICOPTER TO THE RESCUE 🚁

A critically ill adult in fragile condition required immediate transfer from the West Coast to Cedars-Sinai for advanced cardiac care.

The patient was being supported by an Abbott Impella heart pump to maintain circulation, mechanical life support to assist with breathing, and multiple IV infusion pumps delivering continuous medications.

There was no time to wait for the MedEvac Jet to become available

The clock was ticking

During the High Holidays, we pray for life.

As James lay critically ill in a Cuban hospital, his family was fighting to save his. They desperately needed a hospital back home to accept him, but kept hearing “no.”

Then Dr. Leonard J. Pianko said “yes.”

James, a US citizen, had COVID-19 and needed a ventilator in a hospital experiencing repeated power outages. Getting him home was becoming a matter of life or death.

When our VitalOne team reached Dr. Leonard J. Pianko M.D., F.A.C.C. at HCA Florida Healthcare, Medical Director of Hatzalah South Florida, he didn’t hesitate. His decision made the transfer possible, and once James arrived, he assembled the ICU team that helped save his life.

TRAPPED IN CUBA WITH COVID-19: A Critical MedEvac to the US

During the High Holidays, we pray for life.

The following story represents a person of extraordinary compassion and kindness, gifting another person the gift of life.

A US citizen, James, was critically ill with COVID-19 in Cuba. The hospital was contending with intermittent power outages while his condition deteriorated by the hour, and time was running out.

We reached out to Dr. Leonard J. Pianko, M.D., F.A.C.C. at HCA Florida Healthcare Aventura Hospital and Medical Director at Hatzalah South Florida, a physician known as much for his compassion as his expertise.

He could have said no. But Dr. Pianko didn’t hesitate.

He helped open the door this family desperately needed.

Please allow us to share with you the journey our family has been through over the past 15 months as we searched for elusive answers to our son’s life-threatening medical condition.

Our son was born with a rare metabolic disease called Propionic Acidemia. At 18 months, he was in complete liver failure and required a liver transplant donated by his mother. Sadly, just two months later, at 20 months, he began suffering from life-threatening seizures.

Unfortunately, in Israel, we were unable to find effective medical care beyond conventional seizure medications. Desperate to find answers and a way to help our son, we made the difficult decision to travel to the US in hopes of finding the specialized care he desperately needed.

We spent 10 long months in and out of a children’s hospital in Manhattan. Despite extensive efforts, they were unable to find a solution for his seizures. We were even told that his seizures were not related to his underlying rare metabolic condition.
