As temperatures rise in the New York City metro area, it's important to be prepared and plan ahead to stay safe and cool.

Here are some steps you can take to limit the risks of sun and heat exposure:

💧Stay hydrated. Bring plenty of water and make a plan to refill. Water refilling stations are available on both Liberty and Ellis Island. Replenish your electrolytes and salts as well!

🌴Stick to the shade and limit your time outdoors. Find indoor places like the Ellis Island National Museum of Immigration to spend the majority of your time.

👕Wear light and breathable clothing. Consider wearing a hat or bringing an umbrella to limit sun exposure. Don't forget the sunscreen as well!

☀️Pay special attention to children and friends/family members who may be vulnerable to heat and sun exposure.

What a day to celebrate!

Today marks the 250th anniversary of American Independence, and people are celebrating in all sorts of different ways.

In New York Harbor there will be a parade of modern and historical ships aptly named Sail 250. There will be reenactments and celebrations all across the country, and of course, fireworks!

The Statue of Liberty was intended as a gift from the people of France to celebrate 100 years of American Independence. Through it was dedicated 10 years after the centennial, the legacy of that gift and celebration lives on to this day.

Figuring out what someone may have experienced when they immigrated through Ellis Island is a bit like solving a mystery.

On this day in 1885, over 200 crates were unloaded onto a small island in New York Harbor.

Inside these crates were large iron bars and molded sheets of copper. These were the pieces that would become one of the most iconic statues in the world.

There were some issues that would need to be resolved before the colossal statue was finished. The biggest one: the pedestal that “Liberty Enlightening the World” would stand on was nowhere near complete.

A successful fundraising campaign was already underway to aid in completion of the pedestal. In addition, an anchoring system for the statue would need to be installed before work on the concrete and granite structure could continue.

These crates filled with pieces of copper and iron would wait on the island over the course of the next year as the American engineers and workers prepared a befitting pedestal for the colossal gift.

New York City loves a ticker-tape parade!

Throughout the years, ticker-tape parades have been thrown in the Canyon of Heroes in the Financial District to honor foreign dignitaries, amazing feats, returning military personnel, and sports franchises.

Some fans have been waiting 53 years for today’s ticker-tape parade, but the practice has been going on for much longer than that.

The very first ticker-tape parade in New York City took place just under 140 years ago.

What was all the celebration for back then?

The dedication of the colossal statue: “Liberty Enlightening the World”!

We had some special visitors the other day!

The Patrouille de France, the official aerobatic demonstration team of the French Air Force, put both the French and American colors on display in front of the Statue of Liberty. They are currently touring several historical locations on the East Coast of the United States on their "Liberté 250" mission.

Events celebrating 250 years of American Independence will be taking place at National Park Sites all across the country. Follow your local National Park site on social media for updates on what's happening in your area!

Sometimes it can be difficult to tell what part of a historic structure has been repaired or replaced, especially when modifications took place a long time ago.

In the centennial restoration for the Statue of Liberty that took place in the 1980s, replacement bars were stamped with the year that the restoration was completed: 1986!

We’ve had some historically low temperatures in the New York metro area, but the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island National Museum of Immigration are still open for visitors.

Make sure to wear extra layers, limit your time outdoors, and plan indoor adventures into your itinerary.

Ellis Island National Museum of Immigration and The Statue of Liberty Museum are great places to stay warm at the park!

People who climb to the crown of the Statue of Liberty can experience this close up view of the statue’s face.

Her copper shell, or envelope, is made of thin copper sheets that were heated and hammered over molds or forms.

The inside of the copper is a direct negative impression of the statue as seen from the outside, so many of her features are visible from the inside.

Reservations for the crown are limited and can sell out several months in advance. Visit NPS.gov/STLI to plan your trip!

What is the biggest snowstorm that happened in your lifetime?

One of the first big storms that the Statue of Liberty faced was the Great Blizzard of 1888.

Less than a year and a half after the statue was dedicated, this legendary snowstorm dropped over 50 inches of snow to parts of the greater NYC metro area.

After the storm, a New York Times headline declared “Liberty’s Statue All Right”. According to the article, the door to the pedestal was blown open, allowing piles of snow to enter the monument.

Snow allegedly entered the head of the statue as well, but other than that, Lady Liberty was reported to be unharmed by the storm.
