We close with a powerful reflection from none other than Kameron Smalls, the producer of the podcast BlackxSikh.

“Because I grew up in predominantly white spaces, it was so important to make sure my Blackness was reflected back to me. That I could see myself in the images and in the media that I consumed. It’s important for me to maintain my culture, my identity, and the things I’m proud of as I practice this faith.”

We're so grateful to all who shared their stories with us, and please remember to continue celebrating the beautiful intersections of our identity, every day.

Today, as part of Tanenbaum’s Faith and Race series, we hear from Aliya A. Latif as she shares her lived experience as a Black Ahmadiyya Muslim.

“I recognize that we [Ahmadiyya Muslims] are a small community in the U.S. With that, I feel especially passionate about making sure different generations feel connected, welcomed, and inspired about their [our] history.”

“I have always found it meaningful that Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday is joined by the welcoming of a new calendar year. A time that symbolizes a new beginning.

As we prepare for the year ahead, I think about Dr. King’s philosophy of nonviolence. Tanenbaum knows well that nonviolence is not simply the absence of violence. It is not passive, but it is in fact, ‘a way of life for courageous people. It is active nonviolent resistance to evil. It is aggressive spiritually, mentally, and emotionally.’

Let us be courageous together in actively choosing unity over hate. Let us challenge ourselves to learn about identities outside our own. Let us practice by cultivating respect.“

"Though religious and culturally motivated hate is not new, the rise of Islamophobia and antisemitism in the U.S. in response to the war between Israel and Hamas continues to escalate.

On Saturday, three Palestinian students wearing keffiyehs were shot while walking in Burlington, Vermont. Their names are Hisham Awartani, Kinnan Abdalhamid and Tahseen Ahmed. Though the motive behind the attack is still unconfirmed, authorities are investigating the incident as a possible hate crime.

This attack comes just over a month following the devastating murder of a 6-year-old Palestinian boy, Wadea Al-Fayoume. Anti-Muslim and anti-Arab hate is real, with at least 774 reported bias incidents recorded between October 7 and October 24, and it is not exclusively experienced by Muslim and Arab communities. Those perceived to be Arab or Muslim, including Sikhs and Hindus, continue to be victims of Islamophobia.

We cannot reduce prejudice, hatred, and violence against religious communities without exposing all forms of hate."

"Last weekend, we awoke to the news that Hamas, a terrorist organization chartered to destroy the state of Israel and Jews, had conducted an unprecedented terrorist attack against Israel. Nothing justifies the willful murder of innocent humans.

As days pass, the shared tragedy is reverberating far beyond Israel and the Palestinian territories as civilians across the region suffer fear, grief, and horrific loss.

We’re seeing antisemitism and religiously motivated hate crimes rise globally, threatening the space for religious differences to exist. As the ramifications of this war continue to be seen, our commitment to fighting religious hatred for people of all faiths remains unwavering.”
