The school was organized in the fall of 1971 under the leadership of its first principal, Anthony J. The school formally started serving the community on February 2, 1972 at 1166 River Avenue, in Bronx, NY. In 1973, Alvarado was appointed Superintendent of District 4 in East Harlem. Lopez became the school principal until his departure in 1982. The school was relocated, to the premises of PES 11 at Ogden Avenue in 1981.
