About HPD:
The New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD) is the city agency responsible for dealing with an array of housing issues faced by New Yorkers day to day. From tenant issues to new housing developments, HPD manages to use a variety of strategies to improve housing quality, affordability, and availability for low, moderate, and middle income New Yorkers. Currently, HPD is led by Commissioner Vicki Been and together with other agencies, have developed the Housing New York: A Five-Borough, Ten-Year Plan. This plan will develop and preserve 200,000 quality affordable housing units throughout NYC. Division of Housing Policy Research and Program Evaluation:
The staff within the Division of Housing Policy Research and Program Evaluation (HPRPE) provides analytic and evaluative support of programs and policies developed within HPD. HPRPE also conducts grant funded research projects in collaboration with academic institutions. The findings of these studies may have implications for future policies on affordable housing. Research staff members of HPRPE conduct all of the data collection, analysis, and overall field efforts for these research projects. Currently HPRPE is seeking field interviewers to assist with a range of data collection activities for the second wave of the NYC Housing and Neighborhood Study (HANS). Together with academic research partners at Teachers College/Columbia University, HPD is conducting a grant-funded multiphase study that examines the impact of housing and neighborhoods on individuals’ well-being. Because of the interdisciplinary approach, this study has the potential to inform decision-making in multiple domains of public policy—including education, public health, and housing—at the local, state and national levels. HPRPE is beginning the second wave of data collection, which will involve recruiting and interviewing individuals who have applied to affordable housing in the past.
