Pinkster in New York. in Manhattan hosted Pinkster, a historic New York tradition that originated during the Dutch colonial period.
Derived from the Dutch holiday Pinksteren (Pentecost), Pinkster evolved into an important celebration for enslaved and free Black communities, who preserved and celebrated African cultural traditions through music, storytelling, dance, and community gatherings.
Head of Culture Pauline Genee joined the Pinkster celebrations, from the Pinkster Stroll and Lavada Nahon’s lecture on the history and significance of Pinkster to West African dance and live music. Pinkster reflects a unique shared history between the Netherlands, New York, and African American communities.
Thank you to Dyckman Farmhouse Museum for keeping this important history alive.
