It’s Gemini season! In the Hebrew zodiac, the sign corresponding to Gemini is Teomim, meaning “the twins.” Teomim represents curiosity, communication, and adaptability, reflecting an energy that thrives on connection, learning, and versatility.

Teomim is linked to the Hebrew month of Sivan (May to June), a time associated with revelation and understanding. Sivan includes the holiday of Shavuot, which celebrates the giving of the Torah and the sharing of wisdom. This connection emphasizes the value of insight and exchanging ideas. Those born under this sign typically embody a lively mind and an inquisitive spirit.

We spoke with Mikhl Yashinsky () about the histories of the zodiac while standing on our spectacular mosaic floor by the late, acclaimed artist Mark Podwal z”l ().

The twins of Teomim symbolize duality and balance, reminding us of the importance of perspective and flexibility. They encourage harmonizing thought with action and exploring both sides of every situation. In Podwal’s mosaic design, Gemini imagery captures this dynamic energy of learning, communication, and curiosity.

Experience Jewish celestial symbolism through the striking mosaic by artist Mark Podwal z”l (), on view at the Museum at Eldridge Street, where Gemini and the full Hebrew zodiac come vividly to life.

Designed to stay breezy and cool, the Eldridge Street Synagogue features large windows that helped air flow through the space, along with terracotta and cement mortar walls and a slate roof that helped keep the heat out. For worshippers living in crowded, cramped and stuffy tenement apartments, stepping inside offered welcome relief from the summer sun and (often smelly) city life ☀️
