Rembrandt was only twenty-five years old when he painted this portrait 🎨

Shortly after moving to Amsterdam from his native Leiden in 1631, the artist undertook this impressive portrait of the fur merchant Nicolaes Ruts. He renders the textures of fur, satin, leather, paper, skin, and even facial hair with remarkable clarity. Even more impressive is his ability to capture the subject's inner life: the tilt of Ruts’s head, the furrowing of his brow, the softness and uncertainty of his gaze.

On the strength of this debut, Rembrandt went on to paint more than forty portraits over the next four years—almost one a month. He quickly became one of the city’s most renowned artists, and in 1639 he purchased the large home on the Jodenbreestraat that is known today as the Rembrandt House Museum.

Grab a slice to celebrate Helen Clay Frick, born in 1888! 🎂

The daughter of museum founder Henry Clay Frick, Helen was a passionate art historian and collector in her own right. She created the Frick Art Research Library in 1920 and spearheaded many important acquisitions as a founding trustee of the museum—including paintings today displayed in the Gold-Grounds Room, located in what was once her bedroom.

Celebrating the artist who brought the Comtesse d'Haussonville to life 👑🌹

Happy birthday to Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, born in 1780. Ingres presents a scene of casual intimacy, as if Louise de Broglie has just returned home from the opera: her yellow shawl is tossed on the chair at right; her black opera glasses are placed on the mantel; her bright blue evening bag is draped on the mounted porcelain vase behind her.

Did you know that Ingres spent three years laboring over this portrait, producing some eighty preparatory drawings? (Swipe to see one of them, also at the Frick.) When it was finally completed, one commentator said to Louise, “Monsieur Ingres must have been in love with you to have painted you this way.”
