Today and every day, we honor the original caretakers of this land, and the Indigenous peoples still protecting it. 🌽

Before there were highways, power plants or a waterfront to fight over, the Lenape tended these shores, waters and forests as relatives, not resources. That relationship never ended, and neither did their presence.

This Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we lift up rematriation: the Indigenous women-led work of returning land, water, seeds and knowledge to the people who have always cared for them. It asks more of us than acknowledgment. It asks us to listen, to follow Indigenous leadership, and to live in right relationship with the earth.

For 60 years, the wisdom of our grandmothers and our Taíno, African and Indigenous roots has guided how UPROSE organizes in Sunset Park. We fight for this land the way our ancestors taught us: with care, with community, and with the next seven generations in mind.

Some nights you feel 60 years of organizing in one room. September 19 was that night. 🌻

The embraces that lasted a little longer. The DJ who kept us moving. The voices that rose from the stage, and the elders who reminded us whose shoulders we stand on. Tables lit by sunflowers, signs that still carry our demands, and a room full of people who came because Sunset Park is not for sale and never will be.

This is what 60 Years In Motion looks like: a community that organizes, celebrates, and keeps going together. Gracias a cada persona que estuvo presente. Ustedes son el movimiento.

The work continues, and so do we.

Recap of our Repair is Care mending session at La Thrif-teria this weekend!

Community members were invited to swing by our shop and learn mending and sewing techniques or gather to use our resources to work on personal mending projects!

What a great turn out! From first timers walking away with completed sewing projects to seasoned sewers sharing ideas and materials to build something beautiful…we can’t wait for the next one!

Thank you to FABSCRAP and Brooklyn Creative Reuse along with all our local neighbors for fabric and sewing supply donations and our new sewing machine!
