The National Weather Service in New York has issued a Winter Storm Warning for heavy snow, which is in effect from Midnight Tonight to 6 am EST Friday. The Winter Storm Watch is no longer in effect.

Locations: Hudson, Southern Westchester, New York, Bronx, Richmond, Kings, northern Queens, southern Queens.
Hazard types: snow and sleet.
Accumulations: 6 to 10 inches.
Winds: northeast 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 35 mph.
Temperatures: around 30.
Visibilities: one quarter mile or less at times.
Timing: snow will develop late tonight and continue during the day Thursday before tapering off Thursday night. Sleet and rain will likely mix with the snow on Thursday.
Impacts: snowfall will make travel treacherous. In addition, heavy, wet snow may cause some weak, flat roof structures to collapse and trees will be susceptible to falling.

OEM ISSUES HAZARDOUS TRAVEL ADVISORY FOR MONDAY

Monday AM Rush Impacted

Temperatures Remain Below Freezing on Monday and Tuesday

February 9, 2014 — The New York City Office of Emergency Management (OEM) today issued a Travel Advisory for Monday, February 10. The National Weather Service has forecast 1 to 2 inches of snow and accumulation into late Sunday night. The snow will taper off between midnight and 1AM. Temperatures will remain below freezing on Monday and Tuesday. The Department of Sanitation issued a Snow Alert for today at 1PM. OEM encourages New Yorkers to take the following precautions:

For Motorists

If you must drive a vehicle, monitor weather and traffic reports for the latest road conditions. Use mass transportation whenever possible.
Use major streets or highways for travel whenever possible as these roadways will be cleared first.
Drive slowly. Vehicles, including those with 4-wheel drive, take longer to stop on snow and ice than on dry pavement.
Keep the name and phone number of at least one local towing service in your car in case you break down or become stuck in the snow.
If you get stuck on the road stay with your car and contact a towing company.
For Pedestrians

Exercise caution and avoid slippery surfaces; some ice may not be visible.
Wear layers including a hat, gloves and scarf to stay protected from the cold. And, keep clothes and shoes dry.
Keep fingertips, earlobes, and noses covered if you go outside.
Have heightened awareness of cars, particularly when approaching or crossing intersections.
Tips for Staying Warm

Exposure to cold can cause life-threatening health conditions. Avoid serious conditions such as frostbite and hypothermia, by keeping warm.

Wear a hat, hood, or scarf.
Wear layers, as they provide better insulation and warmth.
Keep fingertips, earlobes, and noses covered if you go outside.
Keep clothing dry; if a layer becomes wet, remove it.

Since snow is expected to make roads slippery, we urge New Yorkers to exercise caution when traveling to and from schools. Safety is a top priority for the Department.

Notification issued 1/6/14 at 8:30 PM. As temperatures are expected to drop well below freezing tonight & tomorrow, NYC OEM reminds all New Yorkers that prolonged exposure to extreme cold weather can be deadly. The NWS is forecasting bitterly cold wind chills tonight, with overnight low temperatures between 5-8 degrees & wind chills of -15 degrees. Cold temperatures will continue on Tue with a high of 10 degrees & wind chills near -10 degrees. Overnight temperatures on Tue night will near 5 degrees with wind chills of -10 degrees. Temperatures will remain below freezing until Thurs, 1/9. Vulnerable populations, such as seniors & infants, are most at risk during extreme weather events. Check on friends, family and neighbors if you think they need help getting to a warm place. The NYC DOHMH encourages everyone to stay indoors as much as possible during this time period, & if your home lacks heat, get to a warm, safe place immediately. Report loss of heat or hot water to 311.

Walk-in exams for Police Communications Technicians (911 Operator) exam #4335. $47 Application Fee, MUST take exam by Mon, 9/30. Exam days are Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays at 9:30am, Tuesdays & Wednesdays at 5:30pm, Wednesdays & Fridays at 1:30pm. Test locations are at 2 Lafayette Street (17th Floor) in Manhattan or 210 Joralemon Street (4th Floor) in Brooklyn.
