Handy Minds
A crafts extravaganza curated by Luiza Cardenuto. Throughout history and around the world, the month of August is the time for a number of cultural festivals. Being the hottest month of the year in the northern hemisphere, it was also named the “Weod Monath” (W**d month) by the Anglo-Saxons, because it is the month where plants grow most rapidly. Handy Minds is harvesting this year’s l
ocal culture and arranging it in in an eclectic, experimental celebration of what the city has to offer. Multi-medium artist Luiza Cardenuto brings peers who are passionate about craftsmanship and performers who explore new ways of sensual amusement. Handy Minds is a four-week celebration featuring fine-art crafts, live performances, discussions and delicious food. Each week is devoted to a different dimension of craft – from decorative art, clothing and accessories, to homemade specialties – representing the overall depth and breadth of craftmaking:
Week 1D–The Flat Dimension: displays the rich character of photographs, prints, drawings, literature and painting. Week 2D–Art as Everyday Wear: mixes street styles with an artistic flair; artists will bring out their newest collection of apparels. Week 3D–The House That Art Built: pays homage to all things interior design, showcasing multifunctional art works. Week 4D–Art for the soul: homemade crafts to delight the senses, revealing hidden benefits of art. Artists will also provide guided workshops and group discussions about some of the most oppressing issues in today’s socio-cultural environment. During opening and closing events, enjoy special performances and open mics. Enjoy delicious homemade goodies everyday at the gallery and join us each Sunday at a local garden for barbecue. Come share New York City’s summer cultural harvest at Handy Minds, a unique selection of talents.
