Regional athletes from New Hartford, around Connecticut and beyond converged at Brodie Park this morning for the Litchfield Hills Triathlon. This is a great event that showcases the natural beauty of New Hartford and Brodie Park! Athletes swim a mile in West Hill Pond, ride 26 miles and complete their event with a 10k... Amazing! Coach Mark Wilson and his team do a great job organizing the event for over 250 participants...and keep our park neat as a pin while doing it. Please be mindful of bikers and runners still working their way through West Hill... Thanks!

The Town of New Hartford mourns the loss of Karen Wieduwilt, a truly kind soul. Karen recently retired as our Tax Collector after many years of distinguished service for our community. We extend our condolences to her husband Mark, daughters Emma, Sara, and Clare and the entire Wieduwilt/Sekulski family. We are heartbroken. I'm certain Karen is walking a dog somewhere in heaven...

NEW HARTFORD -

Karen S. Wieduwilt, 68, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, July 6, 2026 surrounded by her family. She was the loving wife of Mark C. Wieduwilt for 34 wonderful years. Born May 15, 1958 in Torrington; the daughter of the late John and Theresa (Yankovic) Sekulski.

Karen retired as Tax Collector for the Town of New Hartford after many years. She was a communicant of Our Lady of Hope Parish, Immaculate Conception Church in New Hartford.

Karen was an avid reader, a talented cook, baker, knitter and crafter who found joy in creating for others. She loved the outdoors and enjoyed kayaking, hiking, and walking her dogs. A devoted animal lover, she cared for many beloved dogs, cats, and chickens over the years. Above all, Karen cherished time with her family and friends, and her greatest joy and proudest accomplishment was being a
mom.

In addition to her devoted husband, she leaves her cherished daughters, Emma, Sara and her fiancé John Carey, and Clare; a granddaughter on the way; siblings, Stephen Sekulski and Robert Sekulski and wife Cindy, all of New Hartford; nephew, Michael Sekulski, and many cousins. She also leaves her dog, Zeke and three granddogs.

Friends may call on Sunday, July 12, 2026 at Montano-Shea Funeral Home, 5 Steele
Road, New Hartford from 1 - 4 PM. A Mass of Christian burial will be held Monday, July 13, 2026 at Our Lady of Hope Parish, Immaculate Conception Church, New Hartford at 10 AM. The storm tonight did major damage in our area. Torrington and Harwinton were hit very hard. I would avoid these towns as many roads could be blocked - and utility crews need space to make repairs. Here in town we have two larger outages - one on Town Hill (175 homes out) and the other on Ramstein (72 homes out) and several smaller outages. I"ve already been in contact with Eversource who will be working through the night to clear roads and restore as many homes as possible. Please be patient..while our town may better off than some, it sounds like there is a lot of damage out there. Please be safe.

Full house at Town Hall last night for our annual Town Meeting with lively conversation and excellent questions. It was our second Town Meeting this year. All items were approved. We're thankful that Aaron Jack and Laurie Boyan have offered to serve on the Stanclift Cove (beach) Board. We also appreciate Mrs. Alesia Kennerson serving as our Town Moderator (as she has for several years). She does a great job of fairly guiding the discussion at our meetings and making sure everyone has the opportunity to participate. Of course we're most thankful to all our resident who came out to participate. In many ways our town sets a great example of bringing our residents together to discuss and debate the issues of the day...and work together to move our community forward! Thank you all for participating!

Heads up on Town Business...we have a Town Meeting scheduled for Thursday night at 7pm.

Typically we have our "Annual Town Meeting" in April each year before we vote on the budget. This year, because we already had a "Special Town Meeting" in late February (to deal with sewers and other issues), we pushed back our schedule until June 25th...

So what's on the agenda you ask?

Well....two elections for Stanclift Cove (one of our two town beaches),

Then (Items 3 - 5) include a proposal to extend (and enhance) our emergency service tax abatement (fire and ems), acceptance of a recreational trail easement (for free), and consideration of a new regional trash authority (called NRRA),

After...(Items 6 - 8) include acceptance of state grants (about $600,000 worth that are mostly used to off-set your taxes),

Lastly...(Items 9 & 10)...approval of how we collect smaller tax bills (bills are $100 are one installment and over $100 are two installments - and supplemental car bills continue to be billed in January.

Congrats to all the graduates of Northwestern Regional #7 Class of 2026! A high achieving group including two grads accepted into our US Military Academies (Air Force & West Point) - not sure I've ever seen that before. Special thanks go out to Superintendent Steve LePage, Principal Gary Franklin and all the staff for helping our students along the way! BTW...each year that I attend these ceremonies I'm amazed by the musical talents of our students. The choirs performance of our National Anthem was spectacular - and the band was great too!

I know you all want to finalize your Summer plans...so here is our Brodie Concert series line up for 2026! We've got a great group of bands set and also included some extra information on the Ukuladies show (food pantry fundraiser) as well as New Hartford Night! We've been trying to bring "Driving Iris" back to New Hartford for a while...and pairing them with The Tradesmen will be a really GREAT show! It's going to be a great summer...and we'll see you all back at Brodie. Next up...the 250th celebration (more info to come)!

Great Spring activities this weekend with New Hartford Youth Baseball & Softball's "Vintage Day" on Saturday @ Brown's Corner starting at 8:30am (great family fun with lots of activities). Also running on Saturday afternoon is the Beekley Library's 30th Anniversary Celebration from 3pm to 6pm - followed by the 2nd Annual "Chalk Walk" on Sunday from 10am to 2pm. Please check respective websites/social media pages for details. 3 great events supporting 3 local organizations - I hope you'll support them!

Lastly - please keep all our local businesses in the forefront of your mind this weekend. Pizza Pete has created a nice wave of activity downtown (we had pizza 🍕 last night) - it's great to have Pete back in our downtown! We also celebrate Mulligan's one year Anniversary (Congrats)! But let's also keep all our shops in mind when we're heading out this weekend! These are locally owned businesses (Barden Farm, Gresczyk's Farm, Signiture Wine & Spirits, Calos Cookies, Germains on Main, Good Friends, Michael Angelo's, Village Market & Cafe, Radwick's, New Hartford Marketplace to name a few) that need your help to survive and thrive. It's really amazing what can happen when we all work to support local organizations and businesses. Thanks!
