This week’s parsha begins with two simple words: L**h lecha – “go forth.” But when the Hebrew is translated literally, it also means “go to yourself.” Go to your truth. Go to your becoming. Go to the version of you that’s been waiting all along.

Avraham’s first journey wasn’t just across land – it was inward. It was about questioning and trusting that his path, though uncertain, was his to walk.

Rachel Sussman is co-founder of rigor + ruckus, The MITTEN Lab, and The Business of Broadway, an educational effort that develops more transparency between artists and producers. She also serves as an adjunct professor at Columbia University's School of the Arts and New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. A former WP Theater Lab Time Warner Foundation Fellow, Sussman received the 2018 Prince Fellowship in Creative Producing and was named one of Variety’s “10 to Watch on Broadway.”

In this week’s parsha, we’re introduced to the rainbow. It appears after devastation, when the world is raw and fragile. It doesn’t wipe away what happened, it commits to doing better next time. The rainbow is a reminder to choose compassion over destruction.

Right now, when so much of the world feels flooded with pain and anger, this covenant is extra relevant.

The rainbow calls on us to remember that empathy and care are choices we make – again and again and again.

May we keep choosing compassion, even when it feels hard, and may we be able to appreciate the beauty and potential after each storm.
