Amver
Did you know the Coast Guard has offices in Manhattan?

The Battery Building, built in 1958, is a three-story, waterfront facility that houses several Coast Guard and partner agency units including Recruiting, Coast Guard Auxiliary, AMVER, Public Affairs, Bridge Administration, the Navy league and more.

The building is also capable of serving as a base for contingency operations, due to its strategic location which is accessible by boat, helicopter, rail and road. Nestled between the Staten Island Ferry terminal and Battery Park, the building can often be seen on television or in photographs of the lower Manhattan skyline.

Established in 1958, The Automated Mutual Assistance Vessel Rescue System (Amver) a voluntary global ship reporting system used by authorities to arrange for assistance to persons in distress at sea.

A couple of weeks ago U.S. Coast Guard Pacific Northwest watchstanders used Amver to coordinate the rescue of a person aboard a sailboat taking on water about 730 nautical miles off Oregon's coast.

When Coast Guard rescue coordinators contacted the Amver vessel M/V GERNER MAERSK to help the sailor, the crew recommended the M/V MSC KALINA, which was not an Amver ship but a container ship in closer proximity to the incident, help the mariner.

The M/V MSC KALINA diverted, rescued the person and is proceeding to their next destination.

Amver’s success is tied directly to the number of merchant vessels regularly reporting their position. The more ships on plot, the greater the chance a ship will be identified near the position of distress. Information sent to Amver is protected and used only in maritime emergencies.

Bravo Zulu to the crew of the merchant vessel Mahi Mahi and a U.S. Coast Guard Airsta Barbers Point HC-130 Hercules aircrew for their successful rescue of three mariners aboard an adrift sailboat 825 miles northeast of Oahu!

The Hercules aircrew located the 50-foot trimaran Third Try after it had been adrift for several days and relayed the location to the crew of the Mahi Mahi who had diverted from their scheduled course to assist with the search.

The Mahi Mahi is apart of the volunteer Amver program. AMVER is a computer-based global ship-reporting system used worldwide by search and rescue authorities to arrange for assistance to persons in distress at sea.

The Coast Guard and good Samaritans aboard two commercial vessels located and rescued the crew of the 42-foot white dismasted sailing vessel Coco Haz III 656 miles west southwest of the Hawaiian Islands, Sunday.

"We appreciate the support of the good Samaritans aboard the commercial vessels Nobility and Kalamazoo who made this rescue possible," said Lt. Diane French, command duty officer, Coast Guard Joint Rescue Coordination Center Honolulu. "This was a difficult case given the remote area of the search and a lack of communications with the crew. This case is a big win for the Automated Mutual-Assistance Vessel Rescue System, which the Kalamazoo subscribes to, the Safety NET message system, and the mariners out there willing to help each other."

The three crew are reportedly in good condition, with one possible concussion after further assessment by a flight surgeon, and en route to Honolulu aboard the motor vessel Kalamazoo. They are expected to arrive later in the week.

Crews aboard a Coast Guard HC-130 Hercules and a U.S. Navy P-8 Poseidon airplanes conducted searches over several days. The Coast Guard Cutter Joseph Gerczak (WPC 1126) also responded from Honolulu, but shortly after reaching the search area, they turned back due to a low fuel state.

"We appreciate the support of the Navy Poseidon aircrews who were more than willing to fly and assist us during the holiday season," said French. "While the sailing vessel crew had supplies for the voyage they did not have and electronic position indicating radio beacon. Such a device would have provided their location rapidly and accurately, significantly shortening the search. We recommend anyone undertaking voyages offshore take an EPIRB."

Weather in the area was forecast from the National Weather Service as winds 17 to 28 mph and seas 6 to 10 feet.

Last night Ambassador Garber was in Limassol for the Amver awards to recognize 19 great Cyprus-based shipping companies for their participation in this global search & rescue system sponsored by the U.S. Coast Guard. “We celebrate safety at sea, bravery in the face of danger, and answering the call for help.”

The U.S. Embassy is grateful for the participation of over 180 Cypriot vessels in AMVER and to the Cyprus Shipping Chamber for their support of the AMVER Awards.

AMVER, which stands for Automated Mutual-Assistance Vessel Rescue, has assisted vessels in distress on the high seas for over 60 years. In 2018, a total of 113 AMVER cases were reported, resulting in 82 saved lives! 👏👏
Happy Thursday!

The crew of the Indonesian-flagged fishing vessel KM Aleluya are safe and sound after being transferred to a Palau patrol boat by good Samaritans aboard the Amver vessel Isl Star.

The KM Aleluya was adrift for ten days without electricity, food, and water before being rescued through a joint effort between U.S. Coast Guard Sector Guam, United States Air Force, 日本 海上保安庁/Japan Coast Guard, good Samaritans, and Palau first responders.

The U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Kiska (WPB 1336) located the abandoned KM Aleluya and will tow the vessel back to Palau as well.

This case shows how important our local, regional, and international partnerships are to search and rescue efforts in the Pacific Ocean. Through teamwork we are able to quickly and efficiently respond to life-threatening situations with the greatest chance of success in this vast region.

Bravo Zulu to the crews from the U.S. Coast Guard, United States Air Force and good Samaritans aboard the Amver vessel Isl Star who rescued eight mariners aboard the 60-foot Indonesian-flagged fishing vessel KM Aleluya (previously reported as Hallelujar) approximately 172 miles northwest of Palau, Tuesday!

"This is a great example of why teamwork is so vital to search and rescue operations in this region," said Lt. Jonathan Girot, Sector Guam public affairs officer. "Through the efforts of the U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Air Force, Japan Coast Guard, and good Samaritans, we were able to quickly locate the KM Aleluya and coordinate a response to a dangerous situation."

A U.S. Coast Guard Airsta Barbers Point HC-130 Hercules aircrew located the KM Aleluya and dropped supplies to the crew. They then coordinated with the good Samaritans from the Isl Star who rescued the eight mariners without further incident.

An U.S. Air Force 36th Wing B-52 Stratofortress crew from Andersen Air Force Base, Guam, Guam also contributed to the search.

U.S. Coast Guard First District watchstanders and U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod rescie air crews coordinated the rescue of a boater after his sailboat, Ishmael, was disabled 330 nautical miles east of Cape Cod. The Amver vessel Virtuous Stricker arrived on scene and brought the owner aboard safely.

The weather at the time is reported to be 40-50 knot winds and 10-foot seas.
Three men were rescued from their capsized, 36-foot sailing canoe about 70 miles off Yap yesterday.

The men were all wearing life jackets and were in two separate dinghies drifting with their vessel when the Amver vessel, Frio Mogami, picked them up and transferred them to USCGC Kiska. The Kiska crew is bringing them back to Guam.

“This is a great example of how our Automated Mutual Assistance Vessel Rescue System, or AMVER program, works in coordination with search and rescue,” said Lt. Charles Cummings, Search and Rescue Mission Coordinator, RCC Guam. “Merchant vessels all over the world making offshore voyages are encouraged to participate in the AMVER program. That information helps in keeping track of vessels across the world and helps dispatch the best possible resources to a vessel in distress in a certain area. Having a properly registered PLB like these men did, helps the Coast Guard locate you more quickly and easily.”
