Statement on the ICE shooting in Marble Hill
Yesterday, an unthinkable event occurred, where an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent fired 7 rounds into a busy residential street during school dismissal in Marble Hill. A father was shot, next to his 5 year old child. My thoughts are with our community members who have been injured and/or traumatized by this reckless incident.
We have witnessed ICE create fear and uncertainty in communities across our nation, which is the opposite of their intended purpose of removing dangerous criminals from our communities. This shooting raises serious concerns that demand immediate answers about training and protocol based upon the reckless and dangerous tactics used.
Our residents deserve to feel safe in their neighborhoods, free from harassment, intimidation, and unnecessary violence. We need accountability, and a full and transparent investigation for those responsible. Body camera footage must be immediately made available for the purposes of this investigation, as well as any and all information related to this matter. New Yorkers are supportive of public safety, not tactics and methods that fly in the face of proper policing.
New York deserves better. This city has run on the fuel of immigrants since its inception. They are our neighbors, friends, coworkers, and loved ones. They deserve to be treated with dignity, fairness, and respect.
I stand firmly with our immigrant neighbors and families, and I will continue to fight for the safety, dignity, and rights of every New Yorker. ICE is not welcome in our community.
