New York Coalition to Save the SS United States

The Coalition received news via Cultural Heritage Partners, PLLC, that the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation is moving forward with plans to dramatically weaken the National Historic Preservation Act’s Section 106. As you know, our fight to save the SS United States depends wholly on a fair and just interpretation of NHPA Section 106, and we feel that this move to undermine our national historic conservation laws not only poises SSUS as almost certainly one of the first victims of these changes, but stands to destroy historic conservation for generations.

Our fight is now a fight for everything Section 106 touches, and our ship’s precarious status is at risk of one of the first to fall. If the ship sinks, our history goes down too. We will be announcing when public comments are open, we stand behind Cultural Heritage Partners, and believe SSUS is the perfect symbol of that fight.

As of March 13, 2026, the US Army Corps of Engineers has published a 15 day time period (so, DO NOT DELAY!) to receive public comments on the Future of the SS United States.

Here’s how YOU can make your voice heard:
1) Go to the USACE’s Regulatory Request Site:
https://rrs.usace.army.mil/rrs/public-notices
2) Filter for “FL” and search for “SAJ-1996-03565”
3) Tap on the comment balloon icon to fill out the public comment form, and submit! 🇺🇸

There are multiple examples of fantastic restorations that were written off by many as impossible or delusional, but, time and time again, those passionate about preserving history prove otherwise.

Shown here are photos of the wonderfully restored SS Nomadic before and after restoration efforts. There's a ship in Mobile who's looking strikingly similar to the befores...

As of December 5, the New York Coalition to Save the SS United States has been officially accepted as a consulting party by the US Army Corps of Engineers to join the ongoing Section 106 review for the proposed SS United States reefing project. This ultimately gives the Coalition an official voice in the Section 106 consultation process. We join the SS United States Preservation Foundation Inc in this status and we are united in the fight to save America's Flagship by working with the US Army Corps of Engineers to consider alternatives and modifications to the project that would be less harmful to the historic ship than reefing.
