: The Community Impact Policy Institute has published the first chapter of Spotlight on Breaking Britain's Barriers today.

Victoria Aarons and Ania Mendrek's research finds that the path to economic inactivity begins in childhood, long before a young person becomes disengaged from work. The report draws on national data and two case studies from our Fedcap UK network: Big Picture Learning Doncaster and The New School UK in Croydon, to examine how belonging, attendance, and attainment accumulate and reinforce one another years before showing up in labor market data.

Around 485k children aged 10-15 report feeling lonely, persistent absence affects more than 1.6 million students, and fewer than half reach expected standards in English and Math by age 16.

The paper outlines five changes to intervene earlier: embedding mental health support within education, more flexible and relational approaches to teaching, funded support during reintegration and transitions, and greater integration of education, health, family, and employment services around the whole child.

Each year, Wildcat connects hundreds of participants to an expansive network of support services, with the Enable Program thoughtfully tailoring the job search to each applicants unique needs and career goals.

This work is instrumental in advancing pathways to economic mobility, strengthening community partnerships, and furthering Fedcap's mission to build a more equitable workforce for employers and applicants.

: For the first time, work by ELITE Clothing Solutions, Fedcap’s UK-based social enterprise manufacturing arm, has appeared on an international fashion runway.

ELITE produced bespoke trousers for Cardiff-based designer Adeola’s debut collection at Africa Fashion Week London. Adeola selected ELITE for its local production, environmental practices and social enterprise model, working closely with the team to create 10 custom pieces for her Africa-inspired, hand-painted collection.

Nearly half of ELITE’s workforce are disabled or disadvantaged individuals, including people who have experienced long-term unemployment, learning disabilities, mental health conditions, physical or sensory disabilities, or neurodivergence.

The collaboration advances Fedcap’s vision for a global fashion market for people with disabilities, connecting ELITE’s manufacturing capabilities in the UK with Runway of Dreams in the US and creating opportunities across the industry, from design and production to the people making the clothes.

Today at Civic Hall, we focused our conversation on a simple question—how do we create more pathways to meaningful employment for New Yorkers with disabilities?

Our team joined New York State Industries for the Disabled (NYSID) and the Rockefeller Institute of Government to discuss new research demonstrating the significant economic impact that employment opportunities for people with disabilities generate across New York State.

For more than 90 years, Fedcap has created pathways to economic mobility and wellbeing through sustainable employment. Today, our social enterprises employ nearly 1,200 individuals who earn, on average, 68% more than New York’s minimum wage, while our social enterprise employees have built millions in retirement assets.

But the most important voices today were those of the people doing the work. Barry Daniels is one example of that impact. He has been part of Fedcap Rehabilitation for more than 20 years and today serves as a Work Leader at Penn Station/LIRR. Barry spoke about why his job matters to him and his community. His experience is a powerful reminder that meaningful employment is not simply about getting a job—it is about creating the opportunity to build a career, achieve greater economic independence, and build wealth over time.

: Fedcap has launched Spotlight, a multimedia research initiative from the Community Impact Policy Institute built around Research in Real Time – an approach that pairs data with fieldwork in communities experiencing a challenge and publishes findings as they emerge.

The first Spotlight focuses on some of the most pressing drivers of economic inactivity and disengagement in the UK. Around 2.8 million working-age people are currently out of work due to long-term sickness, while approximately 1 million young people are not in education, employment or training. Over the next couple of months, research will follow pathways across communities in Britain to better understand the barriers keeping people from opportunity, how disengagement takes shape over time and what can help people reconnect.

By pairing national data with what communities are learning on the ground, Spotlight is designed to bring lessons from the field directly into the policy conversation in Britain and beyond.
