My mom raised me on her own and always told me my father had abandoned us before I was even born β but 22 years later, at my graduation, he showed up and said, "YOUR MOTHER HAS LIED TO YOU YOUR ENTIRE LIFE."
My mom was only 20 years old when she got pregnant. She was still a college student, and she raised me all by herself.
She studied and worked long hours to pay the rent on our tiny apartment and keep food on the table.
I remember how, every year, she tried to make my birthdays special. She'd bake a cake and decorate the peeling walls with streamers and balloons.
I never knew who my father was, and I'd never seen him.
My mom hated talking about him. All she'd ever said was that he'd left before I was born.
That was all I knew.
When my graduation day finally came, my mom stood in the crowd, watching me receive my diploma and barely holding back tears.
Afterward, I walked over to her, and we stood there taking pictures together.
Then I noticed a man I didn't recognize standing off to the side.
He was peering around a corner, staring directly at me.
I thought it was strange, but I didn't pay much attention to it.
Then he started walking toward me.
He patted my shoulder and smiled.
My mother's face instantly turned pale.
And right away, I knew WHO was standing in front of me.
It was my biological father.
I stood there frozen, unsure what to do.
Then he cleared his throat and said:
"Son, hello. I've been looking for you for a long time. I'm your father."
My mother seemed to freeze in place.
Then he looked at her, turned back to me, and added:
"Your mother has lied to you your entire life. If you want to know what really happened 22 years ago, you need to listen to me."
My chest tightened.
My mother's eyes immediately filled with tears as she shouted:
"NO, PLEASE, BE QUIET! YOU CAN'T TELL OUR SON THAT!" β¬οΈ
