Our partnership with New Life of New York City, Inc. and Hope for New York provided a whimsical toy store experience, fostering community spirit and joy. Throughout the year, we focus on supporting New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) families and older adults with vital services including digital training, wellness programs, and health assessments. Our Older Adult Center celebrated another year of life-saving services, emphasizing health, wellness, and community engagement. This Holiday season, let’s look at the impact of Vision Urbana, Inc.

The most recent report published November 2024 from the Robin Hood Foundation found that the number of New Yorkers obtaining food from pantries has grown from 1 in 5 to nearly 1 in every 3 new Yorkers. The Vision Urbana pantry system is a critical component of the food-based safety net in the Lower East Side of Manhattan, one that serves over 2,000 residents every week with fresh produce and shelf stable groceries through home delivery and on site distributions at NYCHA communities working closely with our public housing resident leaders and community volunteer stakeholders. We see food security as part of a more holistic approach to health and wellness which includes monthly health forums on communicable and infectious diseases in partnership with Public Health Solutions ‎and ‎Latino Commissionon AIDS, a NYC Aging funded NORC program at The Essex Crossing, ‎NYCHA Seward Park Extension and Grand St Guild developments.

This year thanks to our food champion in Albany NYS Assemblymember Grace Lee and our food security partners at the Hispanic Federation and many others, more than 1,700 Thanksgiving birds were delivered in November by Vision Urbana and it's community and corporate volunteers throughout the Lower East Side NYCHA Public Housing Developments! Last week Wednesday September 4th, Vision Urbana hosted a World Trade Center Health Program and Victims Compensation Fund eligibility screening event where nearly 100 New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) residents were screened and registered to be enrolled into the WTC Health Program! Blood pressure screening by Vision Urbana team of nurses, free consultations from Barasch & McGarry - Lawyers For The 9/11 Community regarding Victim Compensation Fund, giveaways from the 911 Museum and light refreshments and sandwiches from City Harvest were provided during the event between 2pm-7pm.

Three Important Facts:
1. In order to qualify for the Victims Compensation Fund, you must first be enrolled in the WTC Health Program, making screening and enrollment into the WTC Health program a critical first step for all residents impacted directly or indirectly post 9/11 seeking financial compensation due to severe illness or deaths.
2. The WTC health program will support payment of your medical bills even decades into the future making this program a helpful lifeline for you and your loved ones health.
3. The event was hosted at 60 Madison Street in the Alfred E Smith NYCHA development former health clinic and future health and wellness center in partnership with the Hispanic Federation, an official outreach partner for the World Trade Center Health Program and the Alfred E Smith Resident Association!

NYCHA’s Annual Plan Public Hearing

The public has an opportunity to comment on NYCHA’s Draft Significant Amendment to the Fiscal Year 2024 Annual Plan and the Fiscal Year 2025 Draft Annual Plan and Five-Year Plan at a public hearing on Tuesday, July 30, 2024, from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Borough of Manhattan Community College (199 Chambers Street in Manhattan).

The public hearing will be held as a hybrid meeting, so attendees can participate in person or virtually.

If you would like to attend the hearing virtually (Zoom or phone): Instructions on how to participate, as well as meeting materials, will be posted on on.nyc.gov/nycha-annual-plan before the meeting. To attend the meeting by phone, dial 888-788-0099 at the time of the hearing and enter 867 0032 8388 as the meeting code.

The City of New York's primary program for supplying food to food pantries is at risk of being cut by half. These potential cuts come at a time when child hunger has increased to 1 in 4 NYC children, visits to food pantries are up 75% citywide, and a number of expired COVID-era federal programs have left food pantries to fill a significant gap.

This is why United Way of New York City is standing with Food Bank For New York City, City Harvest, New York Common Pantry, Hunger Free America, Project Hospitality, COPO, NY Equity Advocates, Vision Urbana, Inc., and other concerned New Yorkers to call on our local leaders to fund Community Food Connection at $60M.
