Statement on the False Narrative by the Office of the President and the National People’s Party (NPP)
The People’s Progressive Party (PPP) expresses its deep concern regarding the narrative advanced by the National People’s Party (NPP), particularly through its Deputy Spokesperson, Seedy Njie, during a broadcast on GRTS, suggesting that the PPP has endorsed President Adama Barrow.
The PPP respectfully notes that such a representation does not reflect the Party’s official position and has the potential to create public misunderstanding regarding the Party’s constitutional independence. As an institution of State, the Office of the President occupies a position of national trust and is expected to uphold the highest standards of accuracy, impartiality, and respect for the independence of all political parties.
The People’s Progressive Party categorically reiterates that it has not endorsed President Adama Barrow or the National People’s Party. No constitutional organ of the PPP has considered, approved, or authorised any such endorsement. Consequently, any claim or representation suggesting otherwise is inaccurate and does not reflect the official position of the Party.
The PPP reminds all political actors that democratic competition is best served through honesty, mutual respect, and adherence to the truth. Public confidence in democratic institutions depends upon the accuracy of information communicated to citizens.
The Party further notes that a similar narrative was subsequently published on President Adama Barrow’s official page, referring to President Barrow as PORG, while suggesting that the PPP had endorsed the President. Without prejudice and giving the Office of the President the benefit of the doubt, the PPP hopes that this publication resulted from a misunderstanding or an administrative error rather than an intentional misrepresentation of the Party’s position. Nevertheless, the publication has the potential to mislead members of the public and therefore warrants clarification.
The People’s Progressive Party also notes that QTV subsequently published the same narrative on its official page. As a media institution, QTV has a professional responsibility to ensure that information disseminated to the public is accurate, balanced, and properly verified. While the Party gives QTV the benefit of the doubt that the publication was made in reliance on information from official sources, the continued circulation of this inaccurate information has the potential to mislead the public. Accordingly, the PPP will formally request that QTV retract the publication and issue an appropriate correction in the interest of accuracy, fairness, and responsible journalism.
The People’s Progressive Party respectfully calls upon the Office of the President, the National People’s Party, the Gambia Radio and Television Services (GRTS), and QTV to clarify the public record and ensure that accurate information is made available to the Gambian people. The Party believes that transparency, factual reporting, and responsible journalism are essential to maintaining public confidence in the democratic process.
Furthermore, the People’s Progressive Party will submit a formal complaint to the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) and the Inter-Party Committee (IPC) regarding these representations. The Party will respectfully request that GRTS retract the inaccurate information broadcast on its platform and issue an appropriate public correction. The PPP will also request that the statement published on President Adama Barrow’s official page be reviewed and, if found to be inaccurate, be withdrawn or appropriately corrected. Similarly, the Party will request that QTV retract its Facebook publication and issue an appropriate correction in the interest of fairness, accuracy, and responsible journalism.
The PPP remains resolute in defending its constitutional independence, protecting the integrity of its institutions, and ensuring that its official positions are determined solely by its duly constituted constitutional organs. The Party remains committed to constructive democratic engagement founded on mutual respect, constitutionalism, the rule of law, and respect for democratic institutions.
