Riis Settlement is thrilled to receive a two-year Empowerment Grant from The Provident Bank Foundation. This funding will support our youth workforce programming, helping young people gain job training, paid work experience, and mentorship that prepare them for long-term success. We’re grateful to the Foundation for its partnership and investment in the future of our community’s youth.

It was a pleasure to welcome former Queensbridge resident and playwright Marlin Thomas to Riis on Friday!

Marlin's play "Queensbridge," which tells the story of his upbringing in the development, just wrapped up a successful run at Theater for the New City. We're grateful to Marlin for donating a portion of the proceeds to Riis!

If you missed the show, there's good news: "Queensbridge" returns in January for another three-week run, and plans are in the works for a special performance at Riis Settlement. Stay tuned for details!

We’re proud to share that our Executive Director, Christopher Hanway, served as vice chair of the 36th annual United Nations International Day of Older Persons (UNIDOP) event yesterday!

This year’s theme, “The Age of Longevity: Rethinking Systems for Longer Lives,” explored how we can adapt our systems and communities to support people as they live longer.

At Riis Settlement, we’re committed to helping older adults age in place, maintain their independence, and remain active, connected members of their communities.

Thank you to everyone who joined the conversation. Here’s to building communities where people of every age can thrive.

It was another great summer at Riis!

Our youth spent the summer learning, creating, going on trips, making new friends, and having plenty of fun along the way. We wrapped things up with Riis Culture Day, where youth from across our program sites came together for a fun-filled day of art exhibits and performances inspired by Cinderella, The Wiz, The Princess and the Frog, Encanto, and Wicked.

Congrats to our Culture Day winners: PS 166 (1st place), CS 111 (2nd place), and PS 171 (3rd place) — and a big round of applause to all of our youth and staff who made the summer such a memorable one.

Wishing all of our young people a great start to the new school year!
