It was a pleasure to welcome Senator Kirsten Gillibrand back to Hunts Point today as she announced a $6 Million investment to upgrade facilities at the Food Bank for New York City.

As a born and raised resident of the South Bronx who was brought up by a single mother and received groceries from the Food Bank’s each week, this investment is deeply meaningful and personal.

At a time when the White House is determined to cut programs that feed New Yorkers this work is more important than ever. Senator Gillibrand’s outstanding investment will strengthen the Food Bank’s infrastructure, expand its capacity, and help ensure it can meet this moment as more New Yorkers turn to its network for support.

Noble Playground will undergo upgrades to its water service system beginning Monday, September 21.

At the start of construction, the playground is expected to remain open and available for use.

As the project progresses, temporary closures of the public restroom building and, at a later phase, the basketball courts will be necessary to complete the work. Along with Parks and Rec Staff, my office will continue to provide updates as construction advances and will provide notice of any anticipated closures or impacts to playground amenities.

I’m saddened to hear that another person from our community has lost their life after contracting Legionnaires’ disease. My thoughts are with their loved ones and everyone affected by this loss.

Our city is continuing to respond through a highly coordinated effort involving identifying potential sources, cleaning and sanitization, and continued outreach and public education.

We must do our part. If you or a loved one is experiencing flu like symptoms. Go to a doctor right away. Legionnaires disease is curable but its severity increases with inaction.

Today, I stood with LIUNA 79 to call attention to the unfair, unsafe, union-busting and exploitive practices by the companies Marin Workforce & Apex Labor Solutions.

When our city signed off on a deal to give developers money to build housing, we did so with the expectation that the people building the homes are earning a fair wage and benefits. Affordable housing must create opportunities and pathways to success, not pathways to exploitation. Instead, these labor management groups are pocketing money that should be going to workers.

Last year council passed a The Construction Justice Act to stop this shady practice, now it is time to enforce and implement it.

Happy Hispanic Heritage Month!

From September 15 through October 15, we celebrate the cultures, histories, and contributions of Hispanic and Latino communities across our city and nation. The celebration begins on September 15 to coincide with the independence anniversaries of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua, followed closely by Mexico and Chile. Our heritage is so rich, one month simply could not contain it!

One great way to celebrate will be three weeks from tomorrow at the Fiesta de Flores at the New York Botanical Garden on Wednesday, October 7, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. This event, hosted by my office in collaboration with the Garden will include live music, dancing, delicious food and beautiful floral arrangement as we celebrate the Latino heritage and traditions that is sewn into the fabric of the Bronx and makes our borough so vibrant.

Admission is free, but space is limited. RSVP by September 30 at bit.ly/NYBG-Fiesta or the link in my bio.
