Last night at Gotham Hall was truly unforgettable! We are still buzzing from the energy at our 30th annual Champion Celebration. It was a powerful evening honoring the survivors we work with and the dedication of everyone who shows up to support our work. Our clients’ stories reminded us why we do this work, and we felt the collective strength of a community dedicated to safety and healing.

A huge congratulations and thank you to our honorees, Mary Beth Marshall and Mark C. Smith, whose leadership helps make this work possible. We also want to share a special thank you to our Event Chair, Gabrielle Sulzberger. And of course, every single person who joined us to make this event so special. You are our community and we are so grateful.

When we come together like this, it’s a reminder of what’s possible when share the responsibility of building a safer world for everyone. Thank you for your commitment to our vision of safety and healing.

Another big win! The SAFE Shelter Act has officially passed the NY State Assembly.

This follows yesterday’s victory in the Senate, meaning the bill is now headed to Governor Kathy Hochul’s desk. We want to thank Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie and bill sponsor Assemblyman Andrew Hevesi for their commitment to survivors and moving this legislation forward.

The SAFE Shelter Act removes the financial barriers that often keep single adult survivors of domestic violence from accessing safe shelter. Let’s make sure this bill becomes law in 2026!

Big news! The SAFE Shelter Act has officially passed the NY State Senate.

This is a massive victory for single adult survivors in New York—including LGBTQ+ individuals, trafficking survivors, and older adults—who have historically faced structural barriers to finding safe emergency shelter. A huge thank you to Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins, Deputy Majority Leader Senator Michael Gianaris, and bill sponsor State Senator Andrew Gounardes for championing this legislation. We are one step closer to a fairer shelter system that doesn't leave single adults behind.

What’s next? We need the NYS Assembly to pass the SAFE Shelter Act so we can send it to the Governor’s desk. Let’s keep the momentum going!

Mothers can be an incredible source of support for daughters experiencing domestic violence. Every mother-daughter story is different. Each one is a reminder that healing doesn't look the same for everyone.

This Mother's Day, we're honoring all of it—the complexity, the growth, and the love that shows up even when it's hard. Watch Kristel, Celines, and Maya reflect on their relationships with their mothers and the role they played in their healing journeys.

If you or someone you love needs support, we're here. Visit safehorizon.org or call our 24/7 HOPE Hotline: 📞 1-800-621-4673 (HOPE)

The conversation between a mother and daughter about domestic violence can be lifesaving. It can also be incredibly difficult to start.

Stigma, shame, cultural barriers, and simply not knowing the right words all get in the way—even in close relationships. We created a guide for exactly this moment. It walks through what to say, how to set the tone, and how to make sure the person you love feels heard.

A few things from the guide that stay with us:
For mothers, sometimes the simplest observation opens the door. "I notice you haven't been yourself lately—how can I support you?" signals that you're paying attention and that you're safe to talk to.

For daughters, you don't have to explain everything at once. It helps to name what you need first—whether that's someone to listen, or someone to help you figure out next steps.

This is why we do this work. 💕

Celines joined Safe Horizon CEO Liz Roberts on the Tamron Hall Show to share her story as a survivor and what she's built since.

She spoke about how far she has come, what it means to be a mother now, and finding her way back to believing in herself. Liz reflected on why stories like Celines' are the reason she has spent decades standing with survivors.

Nearly 1 in 4 women will experience domestic violence in their lifetime. Through our work at Safe Horizon, we’ve seen that women experiencing violence want to turn to their mothers—but often don’t—because of stigma, intergenerational trauma, or perceived lack of emotional safety. Now more than ever, mothers can better inform and equip themselves to support daughters experiencing violence so they can be a safe place to turn and help break the cycle.

If you think your daughter might be involved in an abusive relationship, here’s how you can help without escalating the situation. March 1, 2026 Veasna Has Safe Horizon
