Little Axe firefighters responded to a substantial wildland fire in our district today around Indian Hills and 168th Ave NE. This fire was started by someone choosing to burn trash during the burn ban. This fire started a second fire which burned several acres and threatened homes. The fire was resistive to control efforts due to drought stressed fuels and repeatedly challenged containment. The responsible party was cited by CCSO. Norman Fire Department, Cedar Country Fire and Rescue CCFD, Oklahoma City Fire Department, Town of Slaughterville, OK, Norman Emergency Management - Volunteer Page, Cleveland County OK District 2, and Cleveland County Sheriff's Office- OK and Norman Regional EMSstat responded to assist in suppressing this fire. Additionaly heavy equipment was lent by L@J Excavation. In all nearly 50 firefighters, police, paramedics, and civilians worked to contain this blaze and ensure public safety, all in temperatures around 100 degrees. We would like to thank our response partners. We also want to remind the public to heed the burn ban. As conditions continue to be hot and dry fires are spreading rapidly and becoming harder to control.

Edit to add: we also want to thank Norman Emergency Communications for their outstanding work on this incident. We asked a lot of them during an already busy period due to the OU game. They never missed a beat, and often do not get the credit they deserve for their part.

Oklahoma City firefighters are urging families to take extra precautions around the water during Labor Day weekend as crews have responded to 18 drowning incidents so far this year, including four in August.

This weekend Firefighter Johnston took some time between calls to show his family around the station a little.

Volunteering doesn’t just take time from our firefighters—it takes time from their families, too. ❤️

There are dinners interrupted, evenings spent waiting, and moments missed while they answer the call to serve our community.

So today, we’re grateful for the little moments at the firehouse when the families get to be part of it, too. Because behind every volunteer is a family making sacrifices right alongside them.

So far today Little Axe Firefighters have responded to two separate fires. First this morning a residential fire. This afternoon a wildland fire with structures endangered. The structure fire was mutual aid with Cedar Country Fire and Rescue CCFD. The wildfire in our district was an escaped burn. This fire was rapidly spreading and endangered several homes and outbuildings, including 2 damaged. One firefighter was injured during this fire and is expected to be ok. The fires are both out at this time. As a reminder hot and dry conditions continue to pose hazards. Fires are spreading rapidly and presenting difficulty in control. Additionally the conditions are taxing in fire personnel. Please adhere to the burn ban. We will request law enforcement issue citations for violation.

Please join us in congratulating Firefighters Dittrich and McHone on their promotion to Lieutenant!
As they step into their new roles as Station Officers and first-line leaders, they will take on the responsibility of guiding crews, making critical decisions, and helping ensure the highest level of service to our community. These are significant responsibilities, but both have demonstrated the dedication, professionalism, training, and leadership qualities necessary to succeed.
We are excited to see them take this next step and are confident they are well prepared for the challenges and opportunities ahead. Congratulations, Lieutenant Dittrich and Lieutenant McHone!

It is like Christmas morning at Little Axe Fire Department today! A shipment of brand new Harris radios arrived. These radios will replace our obsolete fleet of radios with modern current production equipment. This will improve our ability to serve our community as well as the safety of our members. Radios are one of the most critical components of our operations, one of the things we use for every single call, and a lifeline for a firefighter. This is the first time in at least 15 years that Little Axe Firefighters will be equipped with new, unused communications equipment!

This purchase was made possible by the Cleveland County Public Safety Sales Tax. We would like to thank the PSST advisory board, Cleveland County Justice Authority, and the Cleveland County Commissioners for their support in making this happen. We would also like to thank those who fund this sales tax through your shopping in Cleveland County!

Also, a huge thank you to the radio shop and management of Norman Emergency Communications who have provided support and guidance during this process and will be programming all of these very soon!

Yesterday was one of the only days this month we did not respond to any fires in these temperatures that are somewhere just below surface of the sun level, and we appreciated the break! That said, the burn ban in Cleveland County has been extended an additional 2 weeks and remains in full force and effect. No open burning is permitted during this time. We appreciate our communities cooperation in keeping everyone safe from wildfire.
