Congratulations and a HUGE thank you to Crossing Guard Linda Peters who is starting her 50th year as a Crossing Guard in front of Perkins Elementary School. Her dedication and commitment to the safety of the children of Newark is truly remarkable. Thank you, Linda, for helping students start each school day safely, with a friendly greeting and a warm smile for 50 years and counting.

The Village of Newark, NY Police Department received a report that someone called them with the phone number of 315-331-3701 (Village of Newark PD #), indicating that bail had to be paid for a family member. The citizen, being astute immediately hung up and called Newark PD. This scam was not successful. If anyone calls you from a number associated with a legitimate business, Police Department, or any other number asking for money, gift cards, or anything of value, its a scam. Immediately hang up and call the police. Do not under any circumstances give these scammers any info at all. I want to thank tbe citizen who called to report this scam.

Since Monday August 3rd, Village of Newark PD received two delayed 911 calls indicating aggressive panhandlers. Both were in the same general area of S.Main St/E. Miller St and the Dollar General. One couple felt compelled to give the panhandler money. The ruse is needing money for gasoline.

Being generous is a wonderful thing however, if you don't feel safe with the interaction, do your best to remove yourself from that situation. I ask that you immediately call 911 to report any aggressive behavior. We would like to identify the individual or individuals and offer them services if appropriate. Thank you for your continued support of our Police Department.

As the warm weather continues, many try to find a way to cool off. One way that is historically dangerous is cooling off at the canal. The Village of Newark Police Department strongly discourages anyone from swimming in the canal. It's just not safe. The information below was given to the Village of Newark Police Department by the New York State Canal Corp. I ask that we find an alternate way to cool off.

Update:

All 4 males have been identified. Three have been charged. One was 11 years old and unfortunately NYS law doesn't allow juveniles under 12 years of age to be criminally prosecuted for most crimes to include violent crimes. Also, the three that were charged are juveniles and the NYS law doesn't allow me to publicly identify them. This crime occurred at 5:30 pm. As always, if you have information on this crime or any other crime, please call either 911 or the Village of Newark PD at 315-331-3701.

The Village of Newark Police Department is aware of the extensive criminal mischief that took place yesterday in the 500 block of Hoffman St. I'm confident that with tbe help of our community partners, the four individuals will be identified and arrested for the 20 plus damaged windows. The video, unlike the one from Dollar General, is of much better quality.
