Today, we honor Juneteenth, the day freedom finally reached the last enslaved African Americans in the United States on June 19, 1865, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued.

Juneteenth is a time to reflect on the enduring legacy of resilience, strength, and the ongoing pursuit of equality and justice. It serves as an opportunity to recognize Black history, celebrate Black culture, and recommit ourselves to building communities where everyone can live with dignity, safety, and opportunity.

At the Essex County Family Justice Center, we stand in solidarity with survivors, families, and communities as we continue working toward a future rooted in equity, healing, and justice for all.

We also acknowledge the unique barriers many LGBTQ+ survivors face when seeking safety, support, and justice. By raising awareness, promoting inclusive services, and fostering understanding, we can help ensure that every survivor feels seen, supported, and empowered.

This movement started after a court ruling that blamed a survivor’s jeans for her assault.

People around the world responded by wearing denim to challenge that thinking, and to make one thing clear that, Clothing is never consent.

That message still matters. Because victim-blaming still exists. Because survivors are still questioned. Because too many people still stay silent.

At ECFJC, we see what happens when survivors are met with the opposite: support, protection, and people who believe them.
