Mission: To provide professional public safety services in partnership with our community. The City of Newark is located in the southeastern end of the San Francisco Bay and is bordered by the City of Fremont and the bay. includes a staff of one Chief, two Captains, three Lieutenants, eight Sergeants, 45 Police Officers, and 26 non-sworn (civilian) full-time positions. There are two divisions within the police department: Field Operations Division and Administrative Services Division. Overall supervision of each division is the responsibility of a Captain. The Administrative Services Division is responsible for areas such as Internal Affairs, Personnel and Training, Community Engagement, the Volunteer Program, and The Red Light Photo Enforcement Program. Field Operations Division includes Patrol, K9, Traffic, Animal Control, Vehicle Abatement, the Special Enforcement Team, School Resource Officers, Southern Alameda County Major Crimes Task Force, Detectives, Records, Communications, Property and Evidence, Honor Guard, SWAT, and Hostage Negotiation. Volunteer groups include our Newark Police Volunteer staff who assist in the Traffic, Patrol, and Records Units; Explorers/Cadets who are young people aged 14-24 interested in law enforcement; Graffiti Abatement volunteers who dedicate their time to keep Newark graffiti-free; and Reserve Police Officers who supplement our sworn staffing levels. The men and women of the Newark Police Department are committed to providing the highest quality police services to our citizens, business owners, and visitors alike. Working in partnership with our community, we strive to protect the life, property, and liberties of all individuals, be proactive in the deterrence of criminal activity, and enhance the quality of life for our citizens. The Newark Police Department is a special place to work because of its “small city” atmosphere and the tremendous support we receive from the community, City Council, City Manager, and other city staff. The cohesiveness of our officers, command staff, and professional staff also creates a positive and rewarding working environment.

Yesterday, Newark PD motor officers were honored to join agencies from across Alameda County in escorting a steel “I-beam” recovered from the remains of the World Trade Center.

This year marks the 25th remembrance of the September 11, 2001 attacks. The beam serves as a powerful memorial honoring the lives lost, the bravery of first responders, and the resilience that followed.

The Alameda County Fair’s new 9/11 Memorial Exhibit will feature the original steel beam in remembrance of those affected by that tragic day and the unity our nation experienced in its aftermath.

BIKE TO SCHOOL EVENT - MAY 14, 2026

Newark, California – The Newark Police Department is encouraging everyone to be alert to keep bicyclists safe as we proudly join communities across the Bay Area in celebrating Bike Month, highlighted by Bike to School Day on May 14, 2026.

This event is an excellent opportunity for everyone to support our youth and promote bicycle safety.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there were 1,105 people killed while riding a bike in 2022, and an estimated 46,195 bicyclists were injured. “Bicycling is a great means of transportation and recreation, and everyone deserves to ride to their destination safely,” Sergeant Karl Fredstrom said. “Whether you are behind the wheel or on two wheels, we all share the responsibility to move safely on our roads.”

The Newark Police Department suggests the following safety tips for bicyclists and drivers:

Drivers:

• Slow down and follow the speed limit. Be careful traveling through intersections.

• Look carefully for bicyclists and pedestrians before making a turn or opening a car door near streets or bike paths.

• Be patient when traveling behind a bicyclist and give them space when passing. California law requires drivers to change a lane, when possible, to pass bicyclists and always pass with at least 3 feet of space.

• Never drive distracted or impaired.

Bike Riders:

• Use lights at night.

• Although not required for riders 18 and older, always wear a properly secured helmet. Helmets significantly reduce the chance of a head injury in the event of a crash.

• Bicyclists must travel in the same direction of traffic and have the same requirements as any slow-moving vehicle.

• Yield to pedestrians, just as a driver would. Pedestrians have the right-of-way within marked or unmarked crosswalks at intersections.

Newark, California — The Newark Police Department is reminding drivers to always look twice for motorcycles. With the arrival of warmer weather, more motorcycles are taking to the roads, making it essential for everyone to stay alert to help reduce crashes and save lives.

“Motorcyclists are out in greater numbers as the weather warms, and we’re reminding everyone to share the road, Sergeant K. Fredstrom said. “Most crashes involving motorcycles happen when drivers simply don’t see them. Taking a few extra seconds to look twice can prevent a tragedy.”

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there were 6,335 motorcyclists killed in traffic crashes in the U.S. in 2023, representing 15 percent of total highway fatalities for that year. In California, 583 motorcyclists were killed in 2023.

To help protect you and your family, keep the following tips in mind while driving or riding:

Drivers:

• Always check mirrors and blind spots before changing lanes.
• Do not follow a motorcycle too closely. Always keep a safe distance.
• If you see a motorcycle with a signal on, be careful. Be sure that the rider is turning before moving ahead.

Motorcyclists:

• Always wear a U.S. DOT-complaint helmet with eye protection.
• Wear leather or other sturdy clothing such as a jacket, pants, boots with nonskid soles and gloves. • • Add reflective strips or decals to your clothing and motorcycle to make it easier for other drivers to see you.
• Ride defensively. Don’t assume a driver can see you. Avoid riding in a driver’s blind spot.
• Always keep your lights on, even during the day.

Lastly, both drivers and riders should never drive/ride distracted or under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.

Funding for this program is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
