Morris Canal Greenway

Morris Canal Greenway Work is underway to create a 111-mile continuous greenway along the former Morris Canal For additional information, visit MorrisCanalGreenway.org.

This page is maintained by the North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority, which coordinates the Morris Canal Working Group. The goal of the Morris Canal Working Group (MCWG) is to preserve, to the greatest extent possible, the former Morris Canal right of way for conversion into a public greenway. The NJTPA does not maintain the physical greenway, individual segments are maintained by counties and municipalities.

The North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority (NJTPA)'s Corridor Study identified 38 miles of existing greenway, of which about 28 miles are off-road and almost 10 miles are on-road. Previous plans have proposed a continuous alignment for the Greenway in , , and . Existing segments are where the public can walk and bike along a path or designated on-road facility today. The Morris Canal Greenway Corridor Study suggested that nearby residents and local travelers will be primary users of the greenway while regional residents are likely to be drawn to longer off-road segments where parking or transit service is available. There will be long distance through-travelers but the majority of trips are expected to be shorter, local trips to community destinations or for exercise or recreation.
