This is what a Leader looks like!
Four of our rising seniors attended PeerForward's summer workshop in San Diego, California. They networked and learned alongside students from Hawaii, California, Texas, and New York. In various workshops over the course of the 5-day workshop, our students learned about themselves, their strengths and challenges, in order to write the first draft of their college personal statements. They met with a Writing Coach to guide their writing process from brainstorming to drafting to writing a semi-polished statement. Additionally, they met with a College Coach to help them generate a college list of universities they might want to apply to.
After diving into their own processes, our students also learned how to be Peer Leaders. Once school starts back in August, they will assist the School Counselor and the Postsecondary Success Manager in supporting their classmates. Our Peer Leaders will be tasked with running campaigns to help their classmates complete their FAFSAs and apply to college or trade school.
These 5 days were jampacked with workshops and learning and doing. But we also had fun! We visited the boardwalk at Mission Beach, rode rollercoasters and saw animals at SeaWorld, and ate at In & Out. And we experienced this all with our brothers from Eagle Academy for Young Men of Staten Island and Eagle Academy for Young Men of Harlem.
It was a great experience! And our Peer Leaders are ready to lead their classmates on their postsecondary paths.
Thank you, Eagle Academy Foundation and PeerForward for this incredible opportunity.
