As West Side High School prepares to celebrate its Class of 2026 commencement, one senior is closing her high school career with a remarkable combination of accomplishments.

Nakira Poole, West Side High School’s valedictorian, recently passed the New Jersey State Board of Cosmetology and Hairstyling licensing examination. She is the fourth student in school history to earn the credential and the first since the opening of the school’s 403 Salon & Spa.

Poole earned her certification in the midst of a demanding end of her senior year. Within a week of her exam, Poole starred in a school theater production and worked as a makeup artist at the Wicked-themed Fashion Show hosted by the Newark School of Fashion & Design. Earlier this year, she earned recognition as one of the state’s top student braiders, placing third in a SkillsUSA competition.

This fall, Poole will attend Stockton University, where she plans to major in psychology. While pursuing her degree, she intends to continue working in cosmetology.

“I always put my schoolwork first,” Poole said. “But cosmetology is something I love to do, and now I have a foundation for my future. This license gives me a way to support myself while doing something I'm passionate about.”

Poole said earning the license was especially meaningful because it was one of her primary goals throughout high school.

“It means a lot,” she said. “I was nervous waiting for the results. When I found out I passed, I was excited and happy. This was something I had been looking forward to for years.”

Three years ago, Adekunbi Adetayo had never played football.

Today, the Malcolm X Shabazz High School junior and 4-Star elite recruit announced his commitment to Vanderbilt University, one of the nation’s top academic and athletic institutions. He was surrounded by family, teammates, coaches, and educators as he announced his decision at a special news conference this morning.

Adetayo is the latest in a wave of nationally recruited talent from Shabazz. Following the commitments of players such as Zaiden McDonald and Omari Gaines, who are playing at Stanford, and Judah Pruitt who is at Boston College.

Adetayo's story is a powerful reminder that hard work, perseverance, and opportunity can take you anywhere.

Congratulations, Adekunbi!, Coach Gaines, AD Colon, and Principal Buckman. The entire Newark Public Schools community is proud of you and can't wait to see what you'll accomplish next.

Yesterday, Newark Public Schools' Office of Early Childhood welcomed pre-K and kindergarten families to the Newark Museum of Art for the 13th Annual Night at the Museum. Families explored hands-on literacy and math activities led by our outstanding early childhood educators, discovered ways to continue learning at home throughout the summer, and received take-home resources, books, and educational materials.

The event helps families combat the "summer slide" while strengthening the connection between home, school, and community. Through our longstanding partnership with the Newark Museum of Art, students and families also had the opportunity to learn about the many educational opportunities available right here in Newark.

Newark Public Schools welcomed 31 members of the College Board’s Northeast Regional Council who wanted to see firsthand how the district has dramatically expanded access to Advanced Placement(AP) coursework, while simultaneously increasing student achievement.

“This is the Northeast Regional Council’s first school visit,” said Lesley Guggenheim, Vice President of the State and District Division of the College Board. “We’ve had student panels come to us, but we’ve never gone into a high school. We chose Newark because Newark is doing some phenomenal work.”

The district’s AP course enrollments have increased by more than 100 percent, rising from 1,433 in 2019-2020 to 2,895 in 2024-2025.

The district’s number of AP courses has grown from 21 to 32 since 2021.

Meanwhile, the number of AP exams taken increased from 1,309 in 2021 to 2,760 in 2025 with the district’s passing rate climbing from 20.6% to 51.1% during the same time period.

The passing rate is the percentage of exams in which students earned a 3 or higher.

Melba Moore, the Tony Award-winning actress, Grammy-nominated singer, and proud alumna of Arts High School’s Class of 1958, returned to her alma mater last week as the school’s “Principal for a Day,” inspiring students with reflections on her remarkable career and the education that helped shape it.

During her visit, Moore toured the school, participated in student discussions, made morning announcements, attended a student council meeting, and spoke candidly with students about perseverance, self-confidence, education, and the importance of the arts.

“This is really good,” Moore said during the visit. “Even if I just sit and watch, to be in this environment just brings out so much that I don’t even know is in me.”

Moore repeatedly credited Arts High School with helping to build the foundation for her success as a performer and artist.

“I took piano lessons here, I took viola lessons here, I was in the orchestra, I had vocal training here,” Moore told students. “You become a well-rounded musician. It helps you become a well-rounded person.”
