Newark Public Schools’ high schools are on the rise in the 2026 U.S. News & World Report 's Best High Schools rankings!

Science Park High School is ranked No. 16 in New Jersey, rising from No. 33 last year, while Technology High School climbed from No. 91 to No. 64.

“These rankings show the progress we have made through our historic 10-year strategic plan, The Next Decade: 2020–30,” said Superintendent León. “Our commitment to academic excellence, innovative learning opportunities, and helping every student reach their full potential is being realized across Newark’s high schools. Our students are shattering outdated assumptions about what urban schools can achieve.”

Congratulations to the students, families, educators, staff, and leaders whose dedication continues to move Newark’s schools forward!

Congratulations to Carla Ferreira, English teacher at the Newark School of Architecture & Interior Design, on being named the NJDOE’s 2026–27 Essex County Teacher of the Year!

Principal Soraia Mendes joined Ms. Ferreira at the awards ceremony on Tuesday in Ewing, N.J.

A native Newarker, published poet, and holder of degrees from Harvard, Stanford, Cambridge, and Rutgers, Ms. Ferreira returned home to serve the city’s students. Through literature, first-person narratives, independent reading and collaborative discussions, she empowers students—especially multilingual learners—to think critically, embrace their identities and approach the world with empathy and kindness.

“I want students to learn how to analyze the world critically and use that analysis to become more empathetic,” Ms. Ferreira said. “We need empathy and kindness now more than ever.”

Ms. Ferreira represents the extraordinary educators leading Newark classrooms and inspiring students to recognize the power of their own voices.

Newark Public Schools is gaining national recognition for reimagining summer learning!

AASA, The School Superintendents Association, has named Newark one of just three school districts nationwide modeling summer programming that works.

The article highlights how the District has transformed summer learning from traditional remediation into a time focused on acceleration, enrichment, and career exploration.

More than 10,000 children and teens participate in programs ranging from Summer Achieve and Summer Quest to financial literacy, cybersecurity, sneaker design, future-teacher preparation and work-based learning.

This national recognition reflects Newark Public Schools’ commitment to helping students discover their interests, develop their talents, and prepare for success in the year ahead.

Newark’s young artists took center stage!

Students in kindergarten through eighth grade showcased their creativity during the culminating performance and exhibition of the Summer Visual and Performing Arts Academy at Rafael Hernandez Elementary School.

Through dance, musical theater, visual art, songwriting and music production, students strengthened their skills, built confidence and discovered new ways to express themselves. Their summer also included enriching experiences at the Prudential Center, Kean University and the Greater Newark Conservancy.

Congratulations to our talented students, dedicated arts educators and supportive families for making this summer an inspiring celebration of creativity and artistic excellence!

Congratulations to NPS Director of the Office of Visual & Performing Arts Devonne DeNose, East Side High School Department Chair of Visual & Performing Arts Shantavia Burchette, and all who worked with them on this successful summer program!
