The Salvation Army Newark Area Services The Salvation Army Newark Area Services serves Newark and Essex County. In all of these arenas of service, we strive to offer a hand up, not a hand out.

The men and women of The Salvation Army have proudly served the people of Essex County for over 100 years. Throughout those years, our services and programs changed to better serve the changing needs of our communities. The same compassion and dedication brought to the Newark and the Essex County area by the founders, is still the standard in all we do. Each of our services address the challenges

faced by the working poor, single parents and families due to aging, hunger, drug abuse, HIV/AIDS, homelessness and incarceration. As The Salvation Army always strives to keep its finger on the pulse of the community, we are consistently updating our programs to address what is happening and what is necessary to help those that are the most in need. Make our programs more comprehensive and capable of serving those facing special challenges in their lives - Join us. West Side High School senior Jordan Bowers-Strickland added her name to the ranks of New Jersey’s elite track and field athletes, capturing the NJSIAA Group 3 State Championship in the Long Jump at Northern Burlington Regional High School.

Bowers-Strickland secured the state title with a winning jump of 18 feet, 10.25 inches, earning the first-place medal against some of the top competitors in New Jersey and bringing statewide recognition to West Side High School and Newark Public Schools.

The championship was one of two standout performances for Bowers-Strickland at the meet. She also finished third in the 100-meter hurdles, posting the second-fastest time in West Side High School history. Her time was just 0.06 seconds shy of her own school record of 14.60 seconds.
