The Village of Newark purchased its first horse drawn fire pump in 1913. The Newark Fire Protection District was formed in 1946. Lewis Dierzen was named to fire Fire Chief. The district is currently made up of 64 square miles. In 1976, 84% of voters approved a referendum to establish a district wide ambulance service. The current fire house was built in 1981, replacing the old building on Front St

reet. For over 50 years, the Newark Firemen's Association has hosted a pancake supper to raise vital funds to maintain equipment and train volunteer personnel. 100 years after that first horse drawn fire pump, the Newark Fire Department continues to provide exceptional service to the district utilizing modern, up-to-date equipment and dedicated volunteers.

April is National Move More Month — and we’re encouraging everyone to get up, get out, and get moving!

Physical activity doesn’t have to be extreme to make a difference. A simple walk, playing outside with your kids, yard work, or taking the stairs can all improve your health and energy.

🚒 As firefighters, staying active helps us stay ready to serve our community — and we want the same for you!

Here are a few easy ways to “move more” this month:
• Take a 10–15 minute walk each day
• Park a little farther away from your destination
• Choose stairs over elevators
• Get outside and enjoy the spring weather

Small steps lead to big results. Let’s make April a month of healthier habits!

‼️RESTRICTED BOATING‼️

Due to high water levels and hazardous river conditions the Illinois Department of Natural Resources has implemented a Restricted Boating Area (no recreational boating) on the Fox River from Stratton Lock and Dam to the Bridge Street Bridge (Millington). This closure began at 7:00 PM, this evening, 04/06/2026, until such time that water levels and navigation conditions return to a safe and manageable state. See below or visit the Illinois Department of Natural Resources at www.DNR.illinois.gov for further details.

⚠️ Severe Weather Alert ⚠️

Strong storms are expected to move through our area today/tonight. These storms may bring heavy rain, strong winds, lightning, and possible hail.

Please take a few moments now to prepare:
• Secure loose outdoor items such as patio furniture and trash cans
• Charge cell phones and electronic devices
• Have a way to receive weather alerts overnight
• Avoid unnecessary travel during severe storms
• Move vehicles into garages if possible
• Stay indoors and away from windows when storms move through

If you encounter downed power lines, flooded roadways, or storm damage, please avoid the area and report it to the appropriate authorities.

🚫 Remember: Turn Around, Don’t Drown. Never drive through flooded roads.

Our department will continue to monitor conditions and respond as needed. Stay weather aware and keep your family safe.

[12:12 PM CDT Tuesday 3/10/2026]

The NOAA NWS Storm Prediction Center has upgraded a portion of the area to a threat level 4/5 (Moderate Risk) for severe storms later today into this evening, shaded in red on the map, which is for areas primarily south of I-80.

Within the level 4/5 area, the main concerns include damaging tornadoes (potentially strong) and/or destructive hail >=2" in diameter.

Given the current southwestward progression of a lake enhanced cold front, it still appears that areas farther northeast in the level 4/5 (moderate risk) are more likely to have a significant hail threat vs. a significant tornado threat. As we continue to assess the progress of the front and where it ultimately stalls this afternoon, we'll be able to better refine the area of greatest concern for damaging tornadoes.

Within the level 3/5 (Enhanced Risk) area, particularly areas north of the level 4/5, the main concern is for damaging to potentially destructive hail, with localized wind damage also a possibility.
