Licking County Recycling is a government agency responsible for promoting and encouraging recycling to the 170,000+ residents, businesses, and industries of Licking County, Ohio. This is an official page of Licking County Government. This site is intended to serve as a mechanism for communication between the public and the department on the posted topics, and as a forum to further the mission of the department. Any comment submitted to this page and its list of fans/followers may be considered at public record which is subject to disclosure pursuant to Ohio Public Records laws. CAN I RECYCLE THIS? NO! 🚫

National Chocolate Cupcake day is on Sunday. Unfortunately this cupcake and its packaging was found in an office building's recycling bin. The half eaten cupcake, the plastic wrap, and the plastic package are all not accepted in our recycling program. This should have gone in the trash.

Recently spotted on a napkin during a Southwest Airlines flight. ♻ ✈

Two things to note:

1. Kudos to Southwest for using 100% recycled material napkins.
2. One of the reasons we do not accept napkins in our recycling program is because many of them are made from already recycled materials (whether they are a low or high percentage). Fibers in paper that has been recycled already (and is also quite flimsy) are not very sturdy and don't really make it through the recycling process again.

Definitely use recycled material napkins, plates, paper towels, etc. But put them in the trash afterward since they won't recycle again very well, and they are likely pretty dirty/contaminated anyway.

Help stop illegal dumping!

These signs are posted at or near all of our public recycling drop off sites. Please follow these rules. (We know most of you who follow us on social media DO follow these rules!)

If you witness illegal dumping, or people taking items from the bins (this is called "theft of service") please call your local authorities immediately and ask them to send an officer out to stop the situation.

Many times we receive phone calls at our office from residents who are witnessing dumping or theft of service. We are not an enforcement agency so unfortunately we cannot intervene to stop the violators. Law enforcement prefers witnesses to call them directly and immediately to report violations.

CAN I RECYCLE THESE? NO! 🚫

One of our regular followers recently sent us a question about drinking glasses and whether they can be recycled. Thanks, Joan, for the great question!

Unfortunately these types of glasses cannot be recycled. They are intended for long-term use and are made differently than "single use" type glass containers. They are made of different materials that don't recycle well or can't be recycled. So glasses like this need to go in the trash (carefully) or donated if they are still in good shape.

Single-use glass containers - think pickle jars, jelly jars, w**e or b**r bottles, etc. - can be recycled in our public recycling drop off boxes, though!

It's getting to be that time of year when we are wrapping up our gardens and will soon be raking our leaves. If you have lots of yard waste to dispose of, recycling it is actually an option! Give any of these businesses a call to find out about turning your yard waste into mulch:

CAN I RECYCLE THIS? YES! ♻✅

This is considered a plastic bottle, and YES we recycle these! Put the lid back on to ensure that it also gets recycled.

*We often get questions about taking off the plastic wrap type labels on these bottles, large vitamin bottles, and other types as well. If you can take it off - great! But you don't have to. There are so many processes that plastic bottles go through during recycling - washing, shredding, melting - and this happens numerous times. Labels of all types come off of plastic bottles, and ultimately get separated out to become trash. But of course it's helpful to take them off if you can or want to.
