Suspicious Package Investigation on Wheatley Drive
During the morning hours of August 24, 2026, officers with the Newbern Police Department responded to the area of Wheatley Drive after a suspicious package was located.
Newbern Police Department investigators responded to the scene and began an investigation. Out of an abundance of caution, investigators consulted with the Jackson Police Department Bomb Squad to ensure the package could be properly evaluated and handled.
Investigators ultimately determined the package did not pose a threat. Bomb Squad technicians responded to the scene and safely disposed of the package.
Newbern Police Chief Greg Barr expressed his appreciation to the agencies that assisted with the incident.
“I want to personally thank the Jackson Police Department and its Bomb Squad for their quick response and assistance,” Chief Barr said. “We also greatly appreciate the assistance provided by the Dyer County Sheriff’s Office. When dealing with a situation involving a suspicious package, the safety of our citizens and first responders is our highest priority. The cooperation and resources provided by our law enforcement partners allowed us to bring this incident to a safe conclusion."
The Newbern Police Department appreciates the patience and cooperation of residents in the area while officers and technicians worked to ensure the scene was safe.
