Chairman Nick Shealy and Newberry County extend their deepest condolences on the passing of Dr. Harriett Rucker, a former Newberry County Council member and the first woman to serve on Newberry County Council. Dr. Rucker dedicated many years to public service, including her tenure on Newberry County Council from 2017 to 2021, 14 years on the Newberry County School Board, and service on numerous other boards and organizations throughout the community.

"Dr. Rucker dedicated her life to serving others and helping make Newberry County a better place. Her leadership, wisdom, and commitment to our community touched countless lives. She was a wonderful asset to the residents of Newberry County, and her legacy of service will continue to be felt for years to come. She will be deeply missed, and our thoughts and prayers are with her family and loved ones during this difficult time," said Chairman Shealy.

To accommodate as many residents as possible, the Newberry County Council meeting scheduled for Wednesday, June 3, 2026, will be held at the Newberry Opera House, beginning at 6 p.m.

Doors will open at approximately 5:30 p.m.

Ordinance 03-01-2026, which would authorize Newberry County to enter into an Option and Purchase Agreement with Project Altair for a potential data center project, will be on the agenda and open for public comment.

This annual event will take place tomorrow, Sunday, May 24, at 5 p.m. at the Edward Kyzer Newberry Firehouse Conference Center in downtown Newberry.

The service is sponsored by The American Legion, the City of Newberry, and Newberry County.

Newberry County Auditor Donna Lominack had the pleasure of recognizing one of her long-standing employees, Shannon Murphy, for 30 years of service to the Newberry County Auditor’s Office during the most recent Newberry County Council meeting.

Auditor Lominack had this to say of Shannon:
"Shannon Murphy came to work at the Newberry County Auditor's Office on May 1, 1996, and yes, that has been 30 years. I remember the day she came because I loved her red hair. She is a conscientious employee and knowledgeable about the office.
“Her cool, calm, and collected personality works great with taxpayers. Most likely, if you call the Newberry County Auditor's Office, she is the person that will answer the phone. That is only one of her many duties as she handles our monthly vehicle renewals, exempt vehicles, merchant charges, and works at the front counter when needed. She is always willing to help a fellow employee. The Newberry County Auditor's Office is proud to have Shannon on our team."

Newberry County recognized Edward “Ed” Knowles and Captain Michael Stribble for their years of service with the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office during the most recent Newberry County Council meeting. Major Ben Chapman had the privilege of recognizing both officers.

Ed was recognized for his five years of service to the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office. Here is what Major Chapman had to say of Ed:
"After retiring from a previous career, Ed chose to continue serving others by beginning a second career in law enforcement, where he became a trusted and valued member of the agency.
“Ed currently oversees courtroom security operations for Magistrate, Family, and General Sessions Court, helping to ensure the safety, security, and orderly operation of each court proceeding. Through his professionalism, reliability, and commitment to service, he plays an important role in supporting the judicial process and serving the citizens of Newberry County.
“Ed is known as a dependable, by-the-book employee who can always be counted on to handle his responsibilities professionally and to ensure the job is done the right way. His dedication and commitment to excellence have made him a tremendous asset to the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office and to the citizens he serves."

Captain Michael Stribble was next to be recognized for his 25 years of service to the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office. Here is what Major Chapman had to say of Michael:
"Michael began his career with the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office in 2001 and faithfully serves the citizens of Newberry County in a variety of important roles throughout his career. Over the years, he has served as a road patrol deputy, school resource officer, narcotics investigator, lieutenant over investigations, and currently serves as captain overseeing investigations and victim services.
“Throughout his career, Michael has played an integral role in the operations of the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office, consistently demonstrating professionalism, dedication, and a strong commitment to providing the highest level of service to the citizens of Newberry County. His leadership and experience have made him a tremendous asset to the Sheriff’s Office and to this community.
“Law enforcement service runs deep in the Stribble family. Michael’s father, Dean Stribble, also dedicated his career to serving Newberry County and retired from the Sheriff’s Office after 32 years of service."

Newberry County employees Katie Werts and Jessica Osborne were recognized for their years of service to Newberry County during the most recent Newberry County Council meeting.

Katie was recognized for being with the Newberry County Building and Zoning Department for five years, here is what County Administrator Ted Luckadoo said of Katie:
"During her time with Newberry County, Katie has served as zoning administrator, deputy building official, and now serves as the director of building and zoning. In each role, she has brought dedication, expertise, and a strong work ethic that has contributed greatly to the success of the department and the services provided to the citizens of Newberry County.
“Katie’s commitment to her profession is further demonstrated by her achievement of the highest certification offered through the International Code Council as a Master Code Professional, a distinction that reflects extensive knowledge, experience, and dedication to the building and code enforcement profession.
“Her leadership, professionalism, and commitment to serving the public have made her a tremendous asset to Newberry County."

Jessica was recognized for five years with the Newberry County Sheriff's Office; here is what Mr. Luckadoo had to say of Jessica:
"Jessica began her career with the Newberry County Magistrate’s Office on May 5, 2021, where she quickly became a valued member of the team through her professionalism, hard work, and commitment to public service.
“While serving in the Magistrate’s Office, Jessica worked closely with magistrate judges and law enforcement officers to help manage the disposition of court caseloads and ensure the efficient operation of the office. In November 2025, Jessica transitioned into her current role as the E911 clerk with the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office. In this position, she assists the Newberry County E911 director with assigning addresses for Newberry County citizens, helping to support emergency response operations and public safety throughout the county.
“Jessica’s dedication, attention to detail, and willingness to serve wherever needed have made her an important asset to both the Magistrate’s Office and the Sheriff’s Office."

Central Midlands Council of Governments wants to hear from you!

Join the Community Focus Group for older adults, individuals with disabilities, and caregivers to share transportation challenges, barriers to mobility, and ideas to improve transportation services for older adults and individuals with disabilities in the community.

The focus group meeting will be held Thursday, May 28th from 3:00-4:15 p.m. at the Waldrop Senior Center. The meeting location is wheelchair accessible.
