In observance of Memorial Day, our office will be closed on Monday May 25th, as we pause to honor and remember the courageous men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. Memorial Day is a time for reflection, gratitude, and remembrance of those who made the ultimate sacrifice to protect the freedoms we enjoy every day.

Although our office will be closed, we remain committed to serving our community. If you should need immediate assistance during this time, please contact the non-emergency dispatch line at 803-321-2222, and the on call Coroner will assist you.

From all of us at the Newberry County Coroner’s Office, we wish everyone a safe Memorial Day weekend.

A huge thank you to John Greenway with Valor Technical Cleaning for hearing us loud and clear and bringing us a classic toaster! What may seem like a small gesture to some truly meant a lot to us, and it definitely brought plenty of smiles and laughs along the way. It’s always appreciated when someone takes the time to listen, support, and show kindness in such a thoughtful way.

We are beyond grateful for your generosity and willingness to help out, the toaster is going to be a favorite around here! Thank you again, John, for your support, thoughtfulness, and for making our day a little brighter. We truly appreciate you! 🍞

Happy Mother’s Day from the Newberry County Coroner’s Office. 💜

Today, we honor all mothers, those who are still with us, those watching over us from above, and every woman who has loved, guided, protected, and nurtured others like a mother.

Motherhood is a bond that never fades, and today we celebrate the strength, love, sacrifice, and memories that make mothers so special.

We would love for our community to share photos of the mothers and mother figures who mean the most to you, whether in loving memory or celebrating those still here with us today. Feel free to post your photos and stories in the comments so we can honor them together.

Wishing everyone a day filled with love, remembrance, and appreciation.

Today, our office recognizes National Fentanyl Awareness Day.

Fentanyl, a synthetic opioid significantly more potent than morphine, continues to be a leading contributor to overdose fatalities. Many of these deaths involve individuals who were unaware that the substances they consumed contained fentanyl, highlighting the critical need for increased public education and prevention efforts.

We see firsthand the devastating impact fentanyl has on individuals, families, and our community. Each case represents not just a statistic, but a life lost too soon. This day is about more than awareness... it’s about prevention, education, and action.

We urge our community to:
• Talk openly about the dangers of fentanyl
• Never assume a substance is safe or what it claims to be
• Learn the signs of overdose and how to respond
• Carry and know how to use naloxone when possible

Every life lost is someone’s child, parent, sibling, or friend. By spreading awareness, we can help prevent future tragedies.

Preventing overdose deaths requires a unified effort among public health officials, law enforcement, educators, and the community. By increasing awareness and access to resources, we can work together to reduce the number of lives lost.

Together, we can save lives.
