Stay warm and safe everyone!

City of Newberry staff, along with personnel throughout Newberry County are continuing to monitor Winter Storm Fern and prepare for our community.

The Newberry County Emergency Operations Center is staffed and continues to meet and monitor the weather.

With more rainfall and the possibility of more accumulation this afternoon, Police Chief Kevin Goodman is asking the community to shelter in place unless there is an emergency.

If essential workers need help getting to and from work, Goodman said they could contact Newberry County Dispatch at 803-321-2222. This number is also available for questions regarding open shelters.

There are currently occupants at the Gallman Elementary Shelter and at the O’Neal Street Shelter.

Fire Chief Gene Shealy reminds the community to check on their friends and neighbors and to remember to practice safe heating practices we've shared regarding generators and portable heaters.

Stay safe everyone.

A winter storm watch has Newberry County leaders warning residents to prepare for power outages and dangerous roads this weekend as officials say the ice storm could hit harder than Hurricane Helene in 2024.

Happy Kwanzaa everyone!!!

Habari Gani?!
(What’s the news?!)

Today, we mark the beginning of Kwanzaa, a seven-day celebration honoring shared culture and heritage among Americans of African descent. The holiday begins each year on Dec. 26 and culminates on Jan. 1. Kwanzaa is a celebrated cultural holiday alongside Christmas in many African American households.

Each of the holiday’s seven days is defined by a guiding principle for discussion and reflection.

Day one: Umoja (Unity): “To strive for and to maintain unity in the family, community, nation and race.”

On December 13th, I married the love of my life, KristenMichelle!

We joined our lives together in holy matrimony, giving all honor and praise to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

We are incredibly thankful for our family and friends, near and far, for their love and support. It was truly a beautiful and unforgettable day!

“Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.” ~Mark 10:9

Today, we honor FREEDOM.

Juneteenth is more than a date on the calendar. It’s a powerful reminder of our resilience, our strength, and our unbreakable spirit.

On June 19, 1865 two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation our enslaved ancestors in Galveston, Texas finally received word of their freedom. This delayed justice reminds us that freedom has never been freely given, it has always been fought for.

But our story didn’t stop in 1865.

It continues today. In our communities, in our classrooms, in our art, in our movements, and in our voices. We celebrate Juneteenth not just to remember what was, but to recommit to what must be. Equity, Justice, and Liberation for ALL.

Let us honor our ancestors by building on their legacy. Let us celebrate today with pride, purpose, and power.

Happy Juneteenth. ✊🏿

Happy Resurrection Sunday!!!

Today we celebrate the greatest love story ever told, Jesus gave His life for you and I. On the third day, He rose again. Death couldn’t hold Him down! The grave couldn’t stop Him. Because He lives, we have hope, freedom, and a future.

The resurrection of Jesus is a reminder that love wins, grace is real, and new life is possible!

No matter where you are in life, know this: You are deeply loved, fully seen, and never forgotten.
