To our community and all of Preston County — thank you.

The members of Newburg Volunteer Fire Department are incredibly grateful for the continued support shown to volunteer fire departments across our county. The passing of the Fire Levy is more than just funding — it’s a reminder that our communities stand behind the volunteers who answer the call day and night.

Your support helps ensure we can continue protecting and serving our neighbors when it matters most. We are truly thankful to live and serve in a county that values its volunteer emergency services.

From all of us at Newburg Volunteer Fire Department — thank you for supporting your local volunteers.

Please vote "yes" tomorrow to continue to support your volunteer fire departments.

Preston County Fireman’s Association is seeking public support and asking the voters to vote. Yes for the renewal of our current Fire Levy. This is a renewal and not an additional levy. It would go into effect July 1, 2028 if it’s approved it’s being put on the ballot early since there will not be any elections held in Preston County in 2027. Each of the 12 Fire departments would continue to receive an equal share of the levy funds. In an effort to be responsible, stewards of taxpayer dollars while maintaining essential services and due to a slight increase in our tax base, there has been a slightly lower tax rate applied to this renewal, and if approved each year, the assessor will calculate to see if it needs lowered annually to prevent exceeding the annual cap in the levy.

🔥Elevated fire danger today!🔥
Severity: Moderate
Possible threat to life or property
April 10

Elevated fire weather risks develop late this morning into the afternoon as relative humidity values drop between 20 and 30 percent while southwest wind gusts between 15 and 25 mph. Conditions will improve northwest to southeast this evening as rain overspreads the region ahead of a passing cold front.

Please be mindful of open burning, ci******es, and any machinery that may throw sparks as these can all start a wildfire very efficiently in these dry and breezy conditions. Please adhere to any local burn laws that may be in effect for your area.

From Preston County Office of Emergency Management:

As the snow transitions over to sleet and freezing rain, be aware that roadway conditions will change and can be extremely slick. It is recommended to stay inside out of the cold, and off the roadways if possible. If you must travel, allow for extra travel time and use appropriate speed for the road conditions.

It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of Duane "Beef" Hamilton, Director of the Office of Emergency Management and member of Fellowsville VFD. Duane was a dedicated leader, mentor, and committed medic who proudly served the citizens of Preston County.
His professionalism, compassion, and unwavering commitment to public service left a lasting impact on the emergency services community and all who worked alongside him.

We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and fellow responders. Duane will be greatly missed, but his legacy of service will not be forgotten.

Rest easy, Beef; we'll take it from here.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Terra Alta VFD and to friends and family as they mourn the loss of Chief Rob Kirk.
