Today at 13:54 we were dispatched for a structure fire, upon arrival smoke was showing from residence and further investigation resulted in a second alarm being transmitted. A quick response resulted in a quick stop preventing for extension of fire. Residents please prepare and help us by avoiding travel during the storm

Preliminary Winter Storm Forecast : Thu Night 2/24 - Fri 2/25

In a winter full of storms where mild air in the mid levels of the atmosphere has repeatedly resulted in a wintry mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain... we appear on target for another such storm late Thursday night and Friday.

Timing:
- 10pm to 1am : snow develops from SW to NE
- 1am to 4am : periods of moderate to heavy snow
- 4am to 7am : snow changes to sleet south of I-84
- 7am to 12pm : snow mixes w/ sleet north of I-84
- 12pm to 3pm : snow/mix tapers off

Impact:
- Temps below freezing entire region
- Roads snow covered & icy
- Hazardous/Dangerous Travel conditions
- Friday AM commute greatly impacted
- Winds not expected to be a big issue

Snow Accumulation (HVW Zones):
- Catskills & Upper HV (1,2,N3,N4) : 5 to 9 inches
- Mid Hudson Valley (S3,S4,5,6,7) : 3 to 8 inches (w/ sleet)
- Lower Hudson Valley (8,9) : 2 to 6 inches (w/ sleet)

Commentary:
There are aspects of this system that we have very high confidence on, and aspects where our confidence is quite low. We'll have other posts/discussion/fireside chats that will explain those uncertainties in more detail. But a brief summary:
- High Confidence:.. a winter storm will impact the Hudson Valley... The start and end time of the event.. The Friday AM commute will be very hazardous

- Moderate Confidence:.. Upper HV & Catskills will get the most snow.. South of I-84 a changeover to sleet / freezing rain is likely.

- Low Confidence:.. How much snow falls prior to changeover to sleet.

More updates as we get more detailed information about how much warm air will be in the mid levels of the atmosphere, and how much snow vs. sleet vs. freezing rain we expect.

**THE TRUE WEIGHT OF A PAGER**

The Motorola Minitor VI weighs 6.2 ounces until it goes off. When it goes off it bears the weight of the world. *It weighs as much as a dying child as a frantic mother drops them into your arms. *It weighs as much as a Lifepak, jump bag and oxygen tank as you race up flights of stairs to your patient. *It weighs as much as hauling that patient back down those stairs. *It weighs as much as Hurst rescue spreaders while removing a car door. *It weighs as much as removing a lifeless body from that car. *It weighs as much as turnout gear, a Scott Air Pack, and a charged inch and a half hose, as you rush into a burning house. *It weighs as much as carrying your friend in a coffin who lost their life while carrying a pager. Sometimes the weight of that pager is too heavy on your heart and your mind, but you carry it anyways. YOU carry that weight because you care and are compassionate. It gives you pride and honor. It gives you a sense of purpose in this life within our current times. Upon those that bear the weight of that pager is individuals with honor, and thank you. We consider you our brothers, and our sisters.

Those that want to help your community, our local volunteer companies always have extra pagers, and could use help bearing that weight. They will always have room for you, young or older. It's never to late to volunteer!

Our drill ended abruptly last night when we were dispatched to an oven fire. Fortunately all mutual aid companies assigned to this box were at the drill.
Upon arrival nothing showing further investigation shows homeowner was able to extinguish fire. The stove was damaged along with the floor and odor throughout residence. Residence were checked by Town of Newburgh Emergency Medical Services for smoke inhalation.
Right after the conclusion of the oven fire Middlehope units responded to another call an automatic alarm which after investigation was nothing.

Last night we invited all of our Battalion 3 departments and Marlboro Fire to a walk through drill at Danskammer power plant. This drill is to help with awareness of this type of facility. We thank all who attended and hope you got something out of this drill.
