Friends of the Newburgh Free Library are a volunteer group of people who believe in the importance of books, cultural activities, and libraries, for people of all ages. BACK DOOR BOOKS and BOOK FAIR:
One Saturday a month the Friends of the Newburgh Free Library’s host a book fair at the Newburgh Free Library, Back Door Books. The entrance for Back Door Books is on Montgomery Street, limited street

parking is available. The Friends also host a pop up book fair at the Town Branch in the Newburgh Mall in June and December. These book fairs offer quality best-sellers, popular fiction and non-fiction, children’s books and other specialty books. Admission is free. Book Donations:
Thank you for your interest in making a donation to the Newburgh Free Library. The Friends of the Newburgh Free Library will begin accepting book donations again March 1, 2023. Call 845-563-3608 for more information.

-Donations of up to 20 books can be dropped off at the donation bins at the entrance of the Library and Town Branch. Please bring donations to the Newburgh Free Library during open hours. Don’t leave them in front of the Library or at the back entrance or they will be thrown away.

-Donations of more than 20 books can be made by appointment with the Friends of the Library on Mondays between 1 p.m. and 3p.m. To make a donation of over 20 books, please email [email protected]. The Friends can only accept a maximum of 100 donated items per patron. We appreciate donations of:
- Current hardcover and paperback books in good condition.
- Children’s books
- Large Print Materials

We cannot accept:
- Damaged books (e.g., broken bindings, missing pages, soiled, musty or moldy, excessive writing in the text) or clearly outdated materials.
- Books that have been stored for a long time in an attic or basement because they often become musty or smelly, and do not sell.
- Clearly outdated materials, especially computer books and computer programs
- Magazines
- Condensed books (for example, Reader’s Digest)
- Encyclopedias, textbooks, or reference books
- CDs, DVDs, or VHS Tapes
- Workbooks or study guides

How much can I claim as a charitable donation? We do not determine the value of the donation. Receipts can be provided designating how many paperbacks and hardbacks were donated. What happens to the items I donate? Depending on the quality and condition of the donated items, they are placed in our new bookshop, Back Door Books and also for the semi-annual book fairs at the Town Branch. Proceeds support the services and programs of the Newburgh Free Library. Goals:
To increase community awareness and use of the Newburgh Free Library;
To raise money for gifts for the Library;
To sponsor programs to add to the cultural life of the community;
To create public support for the Library. ACTIVITIES:
REGULAR MEETINGS – The Friends of the Newburgh Free Library meet the last Wednesday of every month at the Main Library at 7 p.m. to help plan activities to support the Library. New members are welcome. PROGRAMS AND MATERIALS – Funds raised by the Friends are used to help support library activities such as cultural events and the Summer Reading Program, and for materials such as DVDs, books on CD and new titles. An annual Regina Angelo Scholarship is given to a Newburgh Free Academy student who has been actively involved in community service. The Friends of the Library are sponsoring the Regina Angelo Scholarship again for 2025! They are sponsoring two $600 scholarships for students who are high school graduates attending college or trade school for the first time residing within the Newburgh Enlarged City School District. The application can be found on our website and must be received no later than Friday July 18, 2025. Recipients will be chosen by Friday July 25, 2025.
