Nabil A. Khan for Newburgh School Board

Nabil A. Khan for Newburgh School Board Thank you to everyone who supported me in this year's school board election. Although I didn't win, I'm not giving up.

I'm excited to announce that I will be running for the Newburgh Enlarged City School District school board again next year.

The Newburgh NY school district has scheduled a meeting for Sunday (tomorrow @1230 06/30/2024), which I believe is highly inappropriate. This meeting should be postponed. The primary reason for this rushed scheduling is that two new members are set to join the board on Tuesday. The district appears to be trying to approve contracts before these new members begin their terms.

I urge everyone to take a few minutes to write an email to the following addresses:

In your email, request that no contracts be approved until the new board members have joined and taxpayers have had an opportunity to speak on this matter.

Additionally, I believe that Ms. Rohring's contract should not be extended due to her mismanagement of the district budget, failure to provide requested documents, and failure to accurately account for district spending as required by law. These issues clearly highlight significant problems with accountability and transparency in our school district

It's inappropriate for the Newburgh school district to schedule board meetings on Sundays. Many people have religious obligations on this day. This decision by the district is another example of its ongoing issues with accountability and transparency.

Detailed Summary

The Board of Education (BOE) regular meeting held on June 20, 2024, began with the approval of previous meeting minutes and a financial report. The report highlighted budget allocations for the upcoming school year, focusing on critical areas such as teacher salaries, educational programs, and infrastructure improvements. Key updates on ongoing district projects were presented, including the progress of school renovations and the implementation of new technology in classrooms.

The superintendent provided an overview of academic performance metrics, emphasizing improvements and areas needing attention. The curriculum committee introduced proposed changes to enhance educational standards and incorporate more diverse materials.

Public comments were a significant part of the meeting, with community members voicing concerns about school safety, the impact of budget cuts on extracurricular activities, and the need for more mental health resources for students. Board members addressed these concerns, outlining plans to improve safety measures and support services.

Policy changes were discussed, including adjustments to attendance policies and new guidelines for remote learning. The board reviewed and approved several new policies aimed at enhancing student welfare and educational outcomes.

The meeting concluded with announcements about upcoming events, the next meeting's agenda, and acknowledgments of retiring staff members. The board expressed gratitude for the community's ongoing support and participation in the educational process.

Congratulations to Thomasina A. Bello on receiving the most votes in the recent school board election and securing a 3-year term. Additionally, the 2024-2025 NECSD School Budget was approved by the voters. While I had my reservations about the budget, I remain hopeful that our Newburgh school district will see positive outcomes from these decisions. Let's work together to support our teachers, students, and community for a brighter future!!

An investigation into allegations by three women against former City of Newburgh Police Chief Anthony Geraci concluded that claims of gender discrimination, retaliation, and a hostile work environment were "not supported." Despite accusations of unfair task assignments and retaliatory schedule changes, the probe, which interviewed several department members, found insufficient evidence. Geraci, who left the department for a security job with Newburgh schools, described the accusations as part of a smear campaign. City officials and the school district did not comment. https://tinyurl.com/2n5rtkf3 -

Apologies for the late update. The Newburgh Enlarged City School District has announced that our Deputy Superintendent, Mr. Ed Forgit, has submitted his resignation

I believe we shouldn't raise taxes because our district hasn't performed well. Let's focus on improving the graduation rate first and implementing better policies for teachers to work freely. Instead of giving pay raises to administrative staff, let's allocate that money to student well-being. We need significant improvements before considering a tax increase.

Let's vote NO

The vote is set for June 18, from noon to 9 PM. .

As we are aware, the upcoming vote on June 18, 2024, regarding the budget is of utmost importance to our community.

It has come to our attention that the proposed budget includes tax increases. While we understand the necessity of funding essential services and projects, we firmly believe that burdening our constituents with higher taxes is not the solution.

Increasing taxes would place undue strain on individuals and families already grappling with economic challenges. Moreover, it risks stifling local businesses and hindering our community's growth and prosperity.

We urge you to consider the impact of your vote on the livelihoods of those you represent. A vote against the proposed budget increase is a vote for fiscal responsibility and for the well-being of our community.
