What can one farmer’s diary tell us about life in Newburgh nearly 200 years ago? Quite a lot. 🌾📖

Join HSNBH Trustee Kris Sammarco and historian Jeff Doolittle for Diary of a Newburgh Farmer: The Life of Solomon Watts, an archive workshop exploring Newburgh’s agricultural past through the words of a local farmer who recorded the rhythms of daily life in 1841–42.

Together, we’ll dig into Watts’s diary to uncover how Newburghers worked, farmed, and moved through the seasons in the mid-19th century.

🎨 Newburgh Open Studios is coming to the Crawford House!

Step inside one of Newburgh’s historic homes and discover work by local artists throughout the weekend of September 26–27, from 12–6 PM.

Our Open Studios group show features Gayle Clark Fedigan, Sandy Brandman, Cathy Cahill, JoAnn Johnson, Ann Marie Silvano, Barbara Valentino, Elizabeth Roche, Cathy Prager, Judy Byrne, Lily Norton, and Katherine Mahoney.

And there’s more 👀 We’ll also unveil 12 landscape paintings by Newburgh Hudson River School artist Thomas Pope as part of our expanded 2026 exhibition, The World of Thomas Pope.

Come for the art. Explore the house. Stay for a refreshment. 🖼️

Step into the daily life of a Newburgh farmer in the 1840s. 🌾📖

Join us on Sunday, September 20 from 11 AM to 1 PM for The Life of a Newburgh Farmer: The Diary of Solomon Watts, a rescheduled History Society workshop with HSNBH Trustee Kris Sammarco and historian Jeff Doolittle.

Through Solomon Watts’ diary from 1841 and 1842, we’ll explore Newburgh’s agricultural heritage, the seasonal rhythms of farm life, and what one farmer’s everyday observations can tell us about our community nearly two centuries ago.

Join us September 17 at 7 PM at the Crawford House for an evening exploring Newburgh’s role in the Revolutionary War.

Liam Mitchell of Washington’s Headquarters State Historic Site will take us into the people, places, and events that put Newburgh at the center of the final years of the Revolution.

🏠✨ History House: Miniature Sustainable Decor Workshop

Big creativity, tiny houses! Join us to turn everyday upcycled materials into miniature décor for History House. Think bottle cap ottomans and cakes, popsicle stick bookshelves, button stools, and whatever else you can dream up.

All supplies will be provided, and the workshop is open to all ages. Children under 10 must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

♻️ Registration is required.

What is History House?
History House is a community miniature building project inspired by the historic architecture of Newburgh. Participants have adopted dollhouse kits and attended workshops to learn new skills, build their houses, and create tiny spaces inspired by our city.

Anyone can attend this workshop, whether or not you have adopted a house.

Completed History Houses will be displayed as part of Archtober Newburgh before being auctioned as a fundraiser for the Newburgh Free Library.

🏠 History House: Learn to 3D Print Miniature Furniture!

Join us for a hands on workshop exploring how 3D printing can bring miniature spaces to life. Learn how to create furniture and details for our History House dollhouses inspired by Newburgh’s historic architecture.

History House is open to all ages and adults. Children under 10 must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

Registration is required for this workshop.

🏘️ What is History House?

A new chapter for Newburgh ✨

The New York Times recently spotlighted a major milestone for our city: Foster Supply Hospitality has broken ground on a $45.9 million adaptive reuse project in downtown Newburgh, bringing the city its first upscale boutique hotel in 133 years.

Led by Sims and Kirsten Foster, the project will breathe new life into the former American Legion, YMCA, and historic Masonic Temple on Grand Street. Plans include a 74 room hotel, restaurants, retail, gathering and conference spaces, and a martini bar overlooking the Hudson River.

With an anticipated opening as early as late 2027, three historic buildings are getting a new purpose while remaining part of Newburgh’s story.

🏠✨ Every house has a story. Learn how to uncover yours!

Join Matthew Thorenz, Local History & Government Documents Librarian at the Newburgh Free Library, for a hands-on workshop exploring how to research the history of your home.

Participants will learn how to trace past owners, explore historic maps, search newspapers and photographs, and uncover property and building records that reveal how a house and the people who lived there have changed over time.

Whether you’re restoring an old home, researching your neighborhood, or just curious about local history, this workshop is a great place to start. 🔎📚
