What is happening in Iran?
As of late January 2026, Iran is experiencing the aftermath of large-scale nationwide protests that began in late December 2025 over economic hardships and escalated into anti-government demonstrations. This was met with Iranian forces that has resulted in thousands of deaths. Official state figures report over 3,000 killed, while independent rights groups and UN estimates suggest the toll could exceed 20,000; however, neither of these figures has been confirmed.
The Iranian government has largely suppressed street protests through lethal force, internet blackouts, and arrests. Tensions remain high with reports of ongoing low-level dissent, regime defections, and international warnings, including U.S. military movements in the region. Statements from President Trump caution against further violence or nuclear advances, amid fears of potential escalation.
