It’s black fly season.
Tech Tip Tuesday: Black Fly Defense 🪰
If you’ve spent any time in the White Mountains lately, you already know: black fly season has officially clocked in for work.
You don’t need to suffer through becoming an all-you-can-eat buffet. A few simple tricks make a huge difference:
✅ Picaridin over DEET (for many hikers)
Picaridin works extremely well against black flies and mosquitoes, and unlike DEET it’s generally friendlier to synthetic clothing, packs, watch bands, sunglasses, and other gear. Less chance of finding out your expensive outdoor gear had a bad day.
✅ Treat clothing with Permethrin
Permethrin is applied to clothing, socks, hats, and outer layers before your trip (never directly to skin). Properly treated clothing can provide long-lasting insect protection and helps create another layer of defense.
✅ The MVP: Sun Hoodies
If we had to nominate a piece of gear for Black Fly Hall of Fame status, it might be the humble sun hoody. Lightweight fabric, built-in hood, long sleeves, breathable, and surprisingly effective at keeping bugs off exposed skin. Pull the hood up and suddenly you become a much less attractive target.
(We love the Burgeon Outdoor Sunseeker Hoodie made right in Lincoln, NH!)
Black flies may still file a complaint, but they don’t get a vote.
Stay safe and enjoy the trails!
