Even strong swimmers can lose muscle control in about 10 minutes in cold water. The only difference between life and death in cold water may be your life jacket.

Newbury 2nd Alarm Building Fire

Early Saturday morning Newbury Engine 2, 3 & 4, Tanker 1, and Rescue 1 responded to a building fire on Morse Lane in the South Newbury section of town. They were assisted by mutual aid firefighters from Bradford, Sutton, New London, Sunapee and Lempster.

The home was a double wide trailer with a single story wood frame addition and it was a total loss. The occupants were out of the house upon the arrival of the firefighters. New London Ambulance stood by at the scene but there were no injuries to the occupants or firefighters.

We thank our mutual aid partners for their assistance in bringing this fire under control in a little over an hour. Newbury firefighters spent most of the morning cleaning up and putting the apparatus back in service

It might be warm in lower elevations, but the mountains are expecting a storm Friday into Saturday. If you plan to hike, make sure to stay informed and have a way to check changing weather conditions. Be prepared for snow and cold and always share your hiking plans with someone else.

The final theme of this year's National Electrical Safety Month centers on safe electric vehicle (EV) installations and EV charging safety.

According to multiple reports, over 1 in 5 new vehicles sold globally in 2024 were electric. Some experts predict this share will increase to about 50 percent over the next decade.

It's critical for professionals and consumers alike to understand the hazards and know how to mitigate them.

It’s black fly season.

Tech Tip Tuesday: Black Fly Defense 🪰

If you’ve spent any time in the White Mountains lately, you already know: black fly season has officially clocked in for work.

You don’t need to suffer through becoming an all-you-can-eat buffet. A few simple tricks make a huge difference:

✅ Picaridin over DEET (for many hikers)
Picaridin works extremely well against black flies and mosquitoes, and unlike DEET it’s generally friendlier to synthetic clothing, packs, watch bands, sunglasses, and other gear. Less chance of finding out your expensive outdoor gear had a bad day.

✅ Treat clothing with Permethrin
Permethrin is applied to clothing, socks, hats, and outer layers before your trip (never directly to skin). Properly treated clothing can provide long-lasting insect protection and helps create another layer of defense.

✅ The MVP: Sun Hoodies
If we had to nominate a piece of gear for Black Fly Hall of Fame status, it might be the humble sun hoody. Lightweight fabric, built-in hood, long sleeves, breathable, and surprisingly effective at keeping bugs off exposed skin. Pull the hood up and suddenly you become a much less attractive target.

(We love the Burgeon Outdoor Sunseeker Hoodie made right in Lincoln, NH!)

Black flies may still file a complaint, but they don’t get a vote.

Stay safe and enjoy the trails!
